He helped his son, Arthur, start the Dawn chain with a store in Flint in 1958. The chain now has more than 40 outlets in several states under a national franchise. The elder Hurand retired in 1965 as owner and president of Buttercup Bakeries, an officer of Dawn Donuts and president of Doughboy Donuts. His son now heads Buttercup as well as Dawn.
