NEW YORK (JTA) — A pro-
gram to meet the mounting need
for qualified personnel and profes-
sional leadership in Jewish Feder-
ations has been announced by the
Council of Jewish Federations and
Welfare Funds.
Samuel J. Siberman of New
York, CJF vice president and
chairman of its personnel services
committee, said the federation ex-
ecutive recruitment and education
program was approved by the CJF
board at its quarterly meeting here.
He said the career program
would involve development of "a
continuing and coordinated national
program of recruitment, education,
training and placement of persons
of exceptional ability for identifi-
able -executive positions in cur
Jewish federations."
He added that the federations,
together with graduate schools of
social work and other graduate
programs, would help to provided
"a unique learning opportunity for
young men and women qualifying
for Jewish professional services as
executives."

Who Is a Great Jew?
Tditor, The Jewish News
I found your review of "Great
Jews in Stamps" somewhat sur-
prising. Although there is no single
universally acceptable definition of
who is a Jew, I find it distressing
to have those who voluntarily con-
vert to another faith called "Great
Jews." Sarah Bernhardt stopped
being Jewish when she was bap-
tized at age 12. Similarly a num-
ber of others on the list you re-
peat grew up in various Christian
faiths'—in fact, at least 20 of the
names you listed have been re-
corded as having been baptized.
To add to the irony in your re-
view, the very first name listed as
a "Great Jew" was Dr. Karl Land-
steiner, who sought an injunction
to prevent his name from being
included in Who's Who in Ameri-
can Jewry in 1936 (and who had
converted to Catholicism at the
time of his marriage).
The problem of defining who is
a Jew is complicated and con-
troversial enough without com-
pounding it by claiming as Jews
those who reject the designation
and/or who convert to other re-
ligions. There are enough Great
Jews (many already on stamps)
to fill a book with names and our
people with pride.
