`Jewish Colonel' Mordecai Frizis: a Greek Symbol of Patriotism and Loyalty

The great loyalty of Greek Chris-
tians in preserving the lives of
their fellow Jews during the Nazi
invasion of Greece in the early
1940s may, in part, be explained
by the example of heroism shown
by a famed "Jewish Colonel" who

willingly died in battle for his
country.
Colonel Mordecai Frizis is called
"Greece's Beloved Hero" in an
article printed in Torch Magazine
by C. N. Dombalis. While officially
known as the first Greek officer

to die while resisting Fascist op-
pression on Dec. 5, 1940, Frizis'
personal qualities of enthusiasm,
bravery and concern for his troops,
earned him a place as one of
Greece's most celebrated war
heroes.
A 13th generation descendant of
Greek Jews in Khalkis, Greece,
Frizis was among many thousands
of Greek Jews who joined the
Royal Hellenes army during World
War II.
Frizis served his first tour of
duty at the front in the Greco-
Turkish War of 1922, following
his commission as a lieutenant
from the Reserve Officers'
School of Chalkidos.
Frizis moved up in the ranks
from captain to major to colonel.
A few days before the Italian
Fascist invasion of Greece, Frizis,
assigned to the staff of the Royal
Greek Armies, asked to be placed
in command of a front-line batta-
lion that would halt the Italian
move into northern Greece "with
every sacrifice."
Frizis was victorious in this mis-
sion and became widely known for
his feats. His total devotion went
into planning military strategies
and in the hours before battle, he
would neither eat nor sleep.
Frizis would not listen to those
who warned him away from a
front-post command. He earned the
respect of his troops by insisting
on fighting along with his men,
giving as reason: "I am defend-
ing my fatherland."
The morning of Dec. 5, 1940,
Frizis moved out his troops to meet
the advancing Italians. That day,
an observer writes: "He (Frizis)
quickly washed his face, said his
prayers which he never omitted
and directed the preparation of the
cavalry . . . 'our Colonel' (was)
astride his white stallion as if he
had foreseen this was to be his
Great Day."
But characteristic of Frizis, in
the thick of battle, when fellow
officers warned the colonel to
shield himself, he answered:
"Where my sons are, there I
shall be."
Frizis was injured when a bomb
exploded near him but still he was
concerned for his men's\ safety.
He remained mounted while as-

SANTIAGO, Chile (ZINS)—The
Zionist census (enrollment cam-
paign) here has encountered seri-
ous difficulties owing to the special
political conditions there and to
the emigration within recent
months of a significant number of
active leaders.
As the terminal date of the cam-
paign apporaches, however, ac-
tivity becomes more intense. The
only group which has shown any
special activity is Maccabi, enlist-
ing the largest number of young
people.
A minority of Young Maccabees
also is active, enrolling some of
the older generation and unaffi-
liated Jews. As a result, it is dif-
ficult to predict which political
grouping will have the majority
of votes. Recently, Dr. Miguel
Moldowski, co-president of the
Latin Confederation of General
Zionists, has stepped into the pic-
ture, spurring new activity.

cover. Another shell imbedded it-
self within the colonel and minutes
later, astride his white charger
with feet in the stirrups, the "Jew-
ish Colonel" died.
The village of Bessanchi, where
his body was carried, was re-
named Frizisville to perpetually
honor the hero.
