Sunset's Honey Pecan Coffee Cake
Recently 1 paid a visit to the
Sunset Magazine's Test Kitchens,
in Menlo Park, California. I saw
the busy editors of the magazine
trypig out new recipes, and smelled
the wonderful aromas that 'filled
the offices surrounding the
kitchens. The Sunset kitchens ex-
periment also in kitchen planning
and cooking methods. This work
is done in a beautiful Spanish-
type building with inner yards
blooming with greenery and flow-
ers.
Even though Sunset Magazine
is devoted to California life style,
their books can be of interest in
other parts of the country. I
read a number of the books, and
I liked especially their Menu Cook
Book, and their Cook Book for
Entertaining. Unfortunately, this
book is for the general public in-
terest, and therefore not kosher.
As with so many other good cook
books that we have to adjust to
our own way of cooking, the Sun-
set books too need some adapting
before you can enjoy them.

From the Sunset Menu Cookbook:
Cheese-Tasting Brunch
Fresh fruit ambrosia
Assorted cheeses
Toasted pumpernickel and rye bread
Honey pecan coffee cake
Coffee with Cinnamon
Honey Pecan Coffee Cake
This cake keeps well. Reheat to serve
or toast under broiler. Serve with
butter.
2 cup shortening
3 /4 cup sugar
2 1/4 cup unsifted regular flour
1 .tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. baking powder
1 /2 tsp. each soda and salt
-1/2 cup honey
2 eggs
If, cup buttermilk
1 /3 cup chopped pecans
Cream together the shortening and
sugar. Add one cup of the flour and
the cinnamon. Blend until mixture
resembles crumbs. Remove one-half
cup of this mixture and set aside for
topping. To remaining crumb mixture
add baking powder, salt, soda, honey
and eggs. Blend until blended and
smooth. Add remaining 1 1/4 cup flour
alternating with buttermilk, beating
after each addition just until blended.
Spread batter in a greased nine inch
square baking pan. Work reserved
crumb mixture between fingers until
it resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in
pecans. Sprinkle mixture over top of
batter.
Bake in 375 degree oven for 40
minutes, or until a pick inserted in
the center comes out clean. Makes nine
servings.

Krause and Mrs. Norman H. Ros-
enfeld. Mrs. Arthur Field and Mrs.
Burt Mahler are narrators.
Mrs. Joseph H. Jackier, chair-
man of the annual meeting, said
that the 48 women
who made up the
original board
will be honored
for helping orga-
nize the division
in 1946 in response
to the urgent
needs of what re-
mained of Euro-
pean Jewry. The
division has
Mrs. Jackier grown to 10,000
women, who maintain an educa-
tional program on Jewish services
and participate in the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign—Israel Emergency
Fund.

All woman who contribute to
the campaign are members of
the division and are entitled to
vote at the annual meeting, Mrs.
Max Stollman, president, said.
