MIAMI BEACH (JTA) — Align- ment with ultra-conservatives can- not be the answer of the Jewish community to the ominous threat which the New Left poses to Jew- ish survival in America as well as in Israel, Rabbi Louis Bern- stein, first vice president of the Rabbinical Council of America, declared in addressing 500 dele- gates at the council's convention. While the New Left constitutes a great social and physical danger to the Jewish community in the United States "it would be the height of folly on our part to ex- pect that a backlash toward the right by the Jewish community would solve our problem. On the contrary, it would only encourage . growing defections of our youth from the Jewish community," Rabbi Bernstein said. "We must not be backed into a corner of blind apologetics for the status quo, or hysterical flag-waving. Such blind expediency can only backfire and is morally bankrupt." What is needed, Rabbi Bern- stein continued, is a convincing demonstration "on our part that Jews are not wedded to any `establishment' but that it wel- comes creative and constructive 'discontent—the very hallmark of all religion. We must battle fearlessly against the idolization of any particular ideology and must muster the moral courage to criticize failings encountered in all installations." At another session which 'was dedicated to Jewish education, Rabbi Dr. Bernard Bergman, pres- ident of the National Council of Torah Education, assailed ."the continued failure of the Jewish federations and welfare funds to reorder their priorities to give substantial and meaningful sup- port to Jewish education." Dr. Bergman appealed to all the mem- bers of the RCA to mobilize all political forces to encourage the adVancement of government aid to all religious schools. State legislatures throughout the country were urged by Rabbi Pesach Levovitz, past president of the Rabbinical Council, to "review and to revise the permissive abor- tion laws which have been en- acted." He stressed that This was not an effort to impose Jewish reli- gious law upon the general society but an expression of anxiety over the "general deterioration of moral values in our society, of which permissive abortion is a signi- ficant symptom." Rabbi Levovitz declared that abortions have already assumed "epidemic proportions," and noted that in NeW York City alone, "over 100,000 unborn children have been aborted since the liberalized law went into effect last July 1." He asserted that most of these abortions were dictated by "con- sideration of convenience, not of health." Castigating the daily press for running advertisements which offer easy abortion and lax state laws which legitimatizes permissive abortions, Rabbi Levovitz declared: "We call upon the legislatures to submit their abortion statutes to a serious evaluation in view of the experiences of several states during the past year. We call upon Jewish 'Peace Corps Keeps ItS Volunteers C YOUR FRIENDLY HARVARD ROW MERCHANTS Belle Jacob Wig Shop Burton's Gal Charlotte's, Inc.
