Franz Rosenzweig's Pioneering Work in Establishing Religious Dialogue Franz Rosenzweig was one of the great pioneers in establishing the modern Jewish-Christian dia- logues. His family was well-to-do and ultra-assimilated and he was on the verge of conversion when a great transformation brought him to Jewish philosophic ascendancy and to leadership in interpreting religious thoughts. Rosenzweig worked with Martin Buber on a German translation of the Bible and it was widely ac- claimed among their great joint works. He authored a two-volume work on Hegel's political philos- ophy. In the course of his close Jewish relationships which gave him major status in Jewish literary and religious ranks he helped organize the Frankfurt institute for adult Jewish studies. Rosenzweig's major work, "The Star of Redemption," first was published in 1921. It has just been reissued by Holt, Rinehart and Winston in a translation from the second edition of 1930 by William W. Hallo. The immense work is enhanced by a foreword by Prof. N. N. Glatzer. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 8—Friday, May 7, 1971 Verna) ELECTRONIC OPENER GARAGE DOOR ii.T A R N OW 0& CO . Call Evenings Until 9 353-3284 The result of his long struggle with religious ideas which first almost enticed him to Christian- ity is embodied in "The Star." In this important work, which ranks among the great interpre- tive works on religious philos- ophy, the reader learns about Rosenzweig's exploratory studies of the inter-relation of God, man and the world concerning re- demption and revelation. The man who pioneered in estab- lishing the Jewish-Christian dia- logue divided his work, "The Star," into three parts—The Elements or the Ever-Enduring Proto-Cosmos, The Course or the Always-Renewed Cosmos, The Configuration or the Eternal Hyper-Cosmos. In his explanatory essay Prof. Glatzer states that Rosenzweig's "paths" — Creation, Revelation, Redemp- tion—were used in an attempt "to construct a comprehensive view of reality." Good Works He who has more learning than greater than his knowledge is like good deeds is like a tree with many a tree with fewer branches but branches but weak roots; the first with strong and spreading roots, great storm will throw it to the a tree which all the winds of ground. He whose good works are heaven cannot uproot. —Talmud became my mirror but God's truth. God, who is the last and the first—he unlocked to me doors of the sanctuary which is built in the innermost middle." And in describing "this First" and "the Last" Rosenzweig concluded thus with this triangular inspiration: In .1 WILSON-CRISSMAN CADILLAC NEW CADILLAC? SEE OR CALL ANDY BLAU CALL BUS.
