36—Friday, May 7, 1971 Aaron Droock, Bnai Brith Leader, Past President of Community Council THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Rothberg Uses Legend of Golem as Basis for Historical Novel Aaron Droock, a longtime leader in Bnai Brith, which he served in many capacities, died Tuesday at age 80. He was a founder of the Jewish Community Council and its president for four years. The death of Mr. Droock, 2484 Edison, followed by little more than one month a testimonial din- ner held in his honor by Pisgah Lodge, of which he was the oldest living past president. Mr. Droock, an attorney for 55 years, had offices in the Penob- scot Building. He leaves a sister, Sarah. A member of Bnai Brith since 1915, the year he was graduated from the University of Michigan law school, Mr. Droock joined Pisgah when it was the only Bnai Brith lodge in Detroit. After World War I, in which he was an Army officer in France and Germany, Mr. Droock became active in Bnai Brith. He served as Pisgah pres- ident in the 1920s and led in organizing Louis Marshall, De- troit and East Side lodges. Pres- ident of District Grand Lodge 6 in 1939-40, Mr. Droock also headed the Anti-Defamation League for a period and served on the board of governors of the Supreme Lodge. He was active in the United Jewish Charities and in the Jewish Naturally, the poetic and narra- tive license is resorted to here. Rothberg treats the Golem, names Joseph Golem by the rabbi in the story. He is the factor in defense of Jews, in exacting vengeance for wrongs done to Jews and de- tecting plots planned for the de- struction of the Jewish community on the banks of the Moldau. Rabbi Judah Ben Bezalel Lowe, the famed 16th Century scholar, was known as Der Hohe Rabbi Lowe. He also was known as the Maharal of. Prague. He was the teacher of many prominent rabbis and befriended some Christians. He had a long audience with Emperor Rudolph II on Feb. 16, 1592. He is especially famous as the creator of the Golem--:a grotesque figure which was to protect Jews. He made it out of clay and made it work, according to legend, by injecting the Shem—Name of God —in it. The remains of the Golem were said to have been placed to rest in the attic of the Prague synagogue where Rabbi Lowe wor- shiped and preached. The Golem became an object for fiction writers and as means for theatrical performances. Go- lem became famous as a Habima play. - Now it is popularized again as the subject for a novel by Abraham Rothberg, published by McCaal under the title "The Sword of the Golem."
