Mrs, Samuel Levin BrailleTranscriber

,

Lillian Keidan Levin, wife of
Samuel M. Levin, Wayne State
University economics professor for
many years, died Tuesday at age
82.
Despite a long illness, Mrs. Levin
continued to be active as a Braille
transcriber in both Hebrew and
English. She took up the activity
only six or seven years ago and
had told the Jewish News, "I
decided to do it right or leave it."
While taking lessons with Shaa-
rey Zedek Sisterhood, Mrs. Levin
broke an arm, but made up the
six lessons she missed by using a
Braille transcribing machine
'?ought to her home. After one
Jar, she became a certified
raillist, approved by the Library
of Congress.
For her volunteer efforts, the
sisterhood honored Mrs. Levin,
yet she continued to maintain,
with modesty, that her contribu-
tion as a volunteer was very
small.
Shortly before her death, Mrs.
Levin told the Jewish News that
she was trying to complete, in
English transcription, an article
by Cecil Roth about Jews in the
universities of the Middle Ages.
Mrs. Levin was very meticu-
lous in her work and explained
that Braille transcription must be
perfect or the blind cannot read
with their fingers. Her familiar-
ity_ with the Bible and her knowl-
edge of some Hebrew helped
in her transcription of Hebrew
books, she said.
In memory of Mrs. Levin, her
family has set up a Levin Fund
for Braille at Cong. Shaarey Ze-
dek.
When her husband was on the
Wayne University staff, Mrs. Levin
was active in the Faculty Wives
Club and also sponsored a Jew-
ish sorority. Their home was a
gathering place for leaders in both
academic and Jewish communal
circles during the 1930s and '405,
particularly when Prof. Levin

,

served as president of the Jewish
Social Service Bureau.
Following Prof. Levin's retire-
ment, the couple continued to be
active, taking a long trip to Is-
rael and Europe. For a while, Mrs.
Levin studied ceramics, before
turning to Braille as a social serv-
ice project.
Mrs. Levin's daughter, Mrs. Ber-
nard (Judith) Cantor, recalled her
mother as very observant Jew-
ishly and as a creative woman.
In 1927, before Mrs. Cantor was
born, Mrs. Levin drove her three
children to the University of Wis-
consin where she enrolled in sum-
mer courses in music and psy-
chology.
Mrs. Levin, sister of the late
Judge Harry B. Keidan, was a na-
tive Detroiter and a life member
of Hadassah, active with Jewish
National Fund and a member of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek. She resided
at 20803 Knob Woods, Southfield.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Levin
leaves two - sons, Joseph of Wes-
ton, Mass., and Dr. Herbert; two
daughters, Mrs. Stanley B. (Mir-
iam) Friedman and Mrs. Cantor;
a sister, Mrs. Abraham (Ida) Cap-
lan; and 15 grandchildren.
