Prof. Mervin Verbit of Brooklyn College will highlight the opening session on the theme of "Evolving a Philosophy of Jewish Communal Service for the '70s—What are the Crucial Decision?" Other conference sessions will consist of small inter-disciplinary meetings. Eight national task force chairmen have been selected to study each issue and prepare materials for consideration at the annual meetings. The National Conference of Jew- ish Communal Service is an um- brella organization of professional Jewish communal workers in the United States and Canada. Asso- ciate organizations, which will hold concurrent meetings June 6-9, are the National Association of Jewish Comunity Organization Personnel, National Council for Jewish Edu- cation, National Association of JeWish Homes for the Aged, Asso- ciation of Jewish Center Workers, Association of Jewish Community Relations Workers and National Association of Jewish Family, Children's" and Health Services. New Russian Translation of Sholem Aleichem's Works Scheduled Soon LONDON (JTA) — A new Rus- sian translation of the writings of Sholem Aleichem will soon be published in six volumes by the State Publishing House, it was an- nounced in Moscow. According to the announcement, this will be the most complete translation of the famed Yiddish writer's works. An editorial commission was ap- pointed to supervise the publica- tion, which will have a first print- ing of 100,000 copies. Shalom Chapter Hosts Art Auction The newly chartered Shalom Chapter of Bnai Brith will host an art auction Saturday at the Somer- set Apartments recreation center, Troy. The champagne preview begins at 7:30 p.m. followed by the auc- tion at 8:30. Mrs. Charles Bennett, president, has appointed Mrs. John Heit- kamp and Mrs. Norman Cohn to serve as co-chairmen. Bnai Brith Gives $10,000 for Tay-Sachs Research TORONTO (JTA)--The Upper Canada Lodge of Bnai Brith in this city has donated $10,000 to the Toronto Sick Children's Hospi tal for the purchase of a blood- testing machine for a research program on Tay-Sachs and other enzyme deficiency diseases. Tay- Sachs is a genetic disorder in children which causes destruction of the central nervous system and death by 3 to 4 years of age.
