NEW YORK—An innovative ser-

for the 73rd annual meeting of
the National Conference of Jewish
Communal Service, June 6-9 at
Grossinger's, it was announced by
Aaron Zucker, program chairman.
Prof. Mervin Verbit of Brooklyn
College will highlight the opening
session on the theme of "Evolving
a Philosophy of Jewish Communal
Service for the '70s—What are the

Other conference sessions will
consist of small inter-disciplinary
meetings. Eight national task force
chairmen have been selected to
study each issue and prepare

materials for consideration at the
annual meetings.
The National Conference of Jew-
ish Communal Service is an um-
brella organization of professional
Jewish communal workers in the
United States and Canada. Asso-
ciate organizations, which will hold
concurrent meetings June 6-9, are
the National Association of Jewish
Comunity Organization Personnel,
National Council for Jewish Edu-
cation, National Association of
JeWish Homes for the Aged, Asso-
ciation of Jewish Center Workers,
Association of Jewish Community
Relations Workers and National
Association of Jewish Family,
Children's" and Health Services.

MISS CAROL GARFIELD

Mr. and Mrs. Sol C. Garfield of
Cambridge Rd. announce the en-
gagement of their daughter Carol
Ruth to Leslie Craig Schefman,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Schef-
man of Sodon Lake Dr., Bloom-
field Hills.
Miss Garfield attends the Uni-
versity of Michigan. Her fiance, a
graduate of U-M, will attend law
school in the fall.

New Russian Translation
of Sholem Aleichem's
Works Scheduled Soon

LONDON (JTA) — A new Rus-
sian translation of the writings of
Sholem Aleichem will soon be
published in six volumes by the
State Publishing House, it was an-
nounced in Moscow. According to
the announcement, this will be the
most complete translation of the
famed Yiddish writer's works.
An editorial commission was ap-
pointed to supervise the publica-
tion, which will have a first print-
ing of 100,000 copies. There is no
edition of Sholem Aleichem's writ-
ings in Yiddish available in the
Soviet - Union.

Lodge man of the year Rosen-
der, president of the lodge and

Metropolitan Detroit Bnai Brith
Council, was presented with the
Shalom. Award by the Israel
Bond Organization for his many
years of dedicated service to
Israel Bonds. The dinner-dance
in Rosender's honor resulted in
$65,000 in Israel Bond . pledges.

Shalom Chapter
Hosts Art Auction

The newly chartered Shalom
Chapter of Bnai Brith will host an
art auction Saturday at the Somer-
set Apartments recreation center,
Troy.
The champagne preview begins
at 7:30 p.m. followed by the auc-
tion at 8:30.
Mrs. Charles Bennett, president,
has appointed Mrs. John Heit-
kamp and Mrs. Norman Cohn to
serve as co-chairmen.
The auction, coordinated by
Fred Grossman, will include hun-
dreds of pieces of art, including
works by Chagall, Picasso, Renoir
and Miro.
Tickets will be sold at the door.
The public is invited. For infor-

District 6 to Meet

District Grand Lodge 6, Bnai
Brith, which includes Michigan,
will hold its 103rd annual conven-
tion June 20-23 at the Arlington
Park Towers Motel, Arlington
Heights, Ill. District President
Mitchell G. Dredze of Chicago will
preside.
The convention will include a
combined session with Bnai Brith
Women District 6. Speaker will be
Dr. William Korey, director of
Bnai Brith's United Nations office
and an acknowledged expert on
Soviet affairs.
Other speakers will be Justice
Samuel Freedman of Winnipeg,
recently appointed chief justice of
Manitoba; and Dr. Howard Mor-
ley Sachar, professor of history
at George Washington University.

Bnai Brith Gives $10,000
for Tay-Sachs Research

TORONTO (JTA)--The Upper
Canada Lodge of Bnai Brith in
this city has donated $10,000 to
the Toronto Sick Children's Hospi
tal for the purchase of a blood-
testing machine for a research
program on Tay-Sachs and other
enzyme deficiency diseases. Tay-
Sachs is a genetic disorder in
children which causes destruction
of the central nervous system and
death by 3 to 4 years of age.
