Jewish Candidate for Thant's Job Says He Couldn't Use Office to Aid Soviet Jews UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. (JTA) —Dr. Max Jakobson—the Finnish ambassador to the United Nations, a declared candidate for secre- tary general, and a Jew—said Monday that he considered the question of Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union to be an internal Soviet matter. Dr. Jakobson did not elaborate in response to a formal question by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent at a press lunch- eon of the UN Correspondents Association. Afterward, however, he agre0 that his position meant that So- viet Jewry could not look to him as secretary general for emigra- tion aid'. Asked if as secretary general he could use his office to aid Soviet Jewish emigration by means of quiet diplomacy or moral persuasion, Dr. Jakobson At Mid-America's fabulous resort ... a playtime paradise where you'll enjoy: • Terrific food • Beautiful heated pool and patio • All sports • Gala floor shows / 1, 1 Brickman Plans Activity for Memorial Day • FREE GOLF UNTIL JULY 1 S. He thus took the same position as U Thant, the secretary general since 1961, who has indicated his unwillingness to serve another term. In reply to another question, the Finnish diplomat criticized the religious overtones of the reported Arab agreement to ask Thant to serve another term after Dec. 31 and failing that, to oppose Dr. Jakobson because of his "vulner- ability to outside pressure"—be- lieved to be a euphemistic refer- ence to his religion and thus, by implication, his relationship with Israel. If he had such vulnerability, the envoy said, he would not have been allowed to serve his country for 20 years, would not have been given "sensitive" posts and would not have been nominated by his government for the UN leader- ship. As to his heritage, he asked rhetorically if any secretary gen- eral could possibly be "of no religion, of no race . . . a man who casts no shadow." Most of the 45-minute press conference was devoted to the issue of the People's Republic of China, whose entry into the UN Jakobson favors; but he did not discuss the impact Red China would have on the Mid East crisis as a member of the UN and as a member of the Security Council. (A secret meeting reportedly held March 30 ended with 13 of the 14 Arab delegations to the UN making a joint recommendation that their governments oppose Jakobson for the UN post. Only Egypt was absent. (Diplomats generally believe that a solid Arab front against Jakob- son would kill his chances of elec- tion because the Soviet Union, which has veto power in the Se- curity Council, would adopt the position of the Arabs.) Brandeis U. Rabbi and Scholar Differ on Black Panthers An appeal by a Hillel rabbi for Jewish sup- port of U.S. Black Panthers on grounds of Jewish concern for the oppressed, has been severely criti- cized by a Brandeis University scholar. The appeal was made by Rabbi Sidney Axelrad, Hillel director at the university. The critic was Prof. Leonard Fein. Rabbi Axelrad had asserted that, "as an often despised and perse- cuted people ourselves, with whose history Black tribulations are pro-. foundly parallel, who better than we Jews can or should identify more closely with oppressed Blacks?" He added that there were elements of the Black Panther out- look and actions which he opposed but contended that this did not justify Jewish rejection of the Panther movement. Rabbi Axelrad outlined his views in a letter reprinted in the fall 1970 issue of Response, an independent journal of Jewish opinion. Prof. Fein responded in a letter in the current issue of Response. Dr. Fein disputed Rabbi Axel- rad's argument that the Panthers deserved special consideration from Jews on grounds of con- science. Jews, as Jews, Dr. Fein declared, do not "owe equal sym- pathy to all the oppressed." Dr. Fein declared that one of his reasons for opposing the Black Panthers was his belief that the Panthers "postpone, rather than hasten the day" when the "more serious and more general oppres- sion" of American Blacks Will be ended. WALTHAM (JTA) — Grenade Injures 18; Population Swap at Suez TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Eighteen Arabs were injured April 27 when a hand grenade thrown into a crowded street in the Gaza Strip exploded. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Angels Fly El Al Zahava Angel, an El Al stew- ardess for 12 years, pins wings on a new stewardess, her daugh- ter Rachel. * * * There's a new twist to the "My Son the Doctor" story; it's hap- pening on El Al. Zahava Angel, the mother, has been flying with El Al for 12 years and now serves the airline's first-class passengers. She also is an instructor of air- hostess courses and is a check hostess, under whom young trainee stewardesses take their final checkingout flights. This year, when 19-year-old Rachel Angel, a Tel Aviv-born Is- raeli, finished her military ser- vice, she asked her mother if she could follow in her footsteps. She received her mother's blessing. Rachel is taking special courses to prepare her for service on the 747, the first of which will be fly- ing under El Al colors in June. Mother and daughter are flying for the same airline, though never aboard the same flight. Tel Aviv Hilton to Be Largest Hotel in Mid East NEW YORK — A 196-room ad- dition to the 426-room Tel Aviv Hilton is now under construction. When completed in 1973, it will make the Tel Aviv Hilton the lar- gest hotel in the Middle East and the third largest hotel operated by Hilton International. The new rooms include 13 lux- ury suites offering a view both of the city and of the Mediterranean Sea. The other rooms will be added to each of the upper 14 of 20 total stories, designed to match the existing rooms both in size and decor. Owned by Israel Hotels Interna- tional, Inc., of which the govern- ment of Israel is a major stock- holder, the Tel Aviv Hilton reached a record occupancy rate in 1970. Friday, May 7, 1971-25 Tourists Left Cold TEL AVIV (ZINS)—The pleas- ure of visiting Israel which thou- sands of tourists anticipated dur- ing Passover soured when hotels failed to honor "confirmed" reser- vations, according to reports ap- pearing in the Israel press. The situation reached such alarming proportions that the min- ister of tourism found it necessary to publish an "open apology" to all tourists affected. The local press was quick to point out that a public apology did little to console the disgusted visi- tors. It would have been more ef- fective, the papers say, had the tourist ministry imposed heavy fines on these hotels, hitting them where it hurts, and compelling them to pay closer attention to this matter in the future.
