JNF to Plant USSR Jewry Forest
JERUSALEM—Chester Kerr, di-
rector of Yale University Press,
presented H e b r e w University
President Avraham Harman with
three books and a scroll, including
the first copy of Prof. Judah
Goldin's "Song of the Sea," as
part of a gift to the university of
all the 50 volumes in the Yale
University Press stall, at the fifth
International Book Fair.
Prior to meeting Harman, Kerr
toured the university's Givat Ram
campus and visited the Jewish
National and University Library
where he was received by its
director, Dr. Israel Adler.
The book gift represents a cross-
section of recent publications by
Yale University Press and includes
the Yale Judaica Series, a two-
volume set on American silver, as
well as studies, philosophy and
science.
The Hebrew University of Jeru-
salem ranks with leading institu-
tions in the world as a center of
radiation research, said Prof. Gab-
riel Stein, speaking at the dedica-
tion of the Andy Brickman Memo-
rial Accelerator Building erected

The event, chaired by University
President Harman, was attended
by David Brown, who had made
the endowment in the name of his
late wife together with their chil-
dren, Stanley and Jack Brown and
Mrs. Gertrude Weiner.
A Freedom Forest for Soviet
Jewry will be planted in the
Judean Hills near Shaar Hagai in
the vicinity of Jerusalem, through
the Jewish National Fund, as a
worldwide expression of solidarity
with Jews striving to leave the
Soviet Union for Israel.
Heading the American commit-
tee for the new. forest will be
Herman L. Weisman, president of
the JNF of America. Jack Benny
has been named national honorary
chairman. A national committee,
now in formation, will include the
presidents of major American
Jewish organizations and other
prominent figures.
A special tree certificate for
this world endeavor on behalf of
Russian Jewry will be sent to
each donor of trees in the new
forest.
The recent Brussels Conference
on Soviet Jewry adopted the idea
of a Freedom Forest as a symbol
of the ongoing struggle of Soviet
Jews for a new life in Israel. Jew-
ish communities in the free world
have shown their eagerness to
participate in the planting of the
forest.

In a letter to all members of
the council, Clingan, a Manhattan
Liberal, said that he would ask for
immediate consideration of the
resolution at the next Council
meeting.
Clingan said that Congress has
previously passed legislation to
enable the refugees of Hungary,
Czechoslovakia and Cuba to emi-
grate to this country. "Yet, the
current refugee quota to the East-
ern Hemisphere would bar thou-
sands of Soviet Jews from our
shores even if they were allowed
to emigrate on a modest scale,"
he noted.
Congressman Edward I. Koch,
a New York Democrat-Liberal, has
introduced the Soviet Jews Relief
Act of 1971 which authorizes 30,000
special visas outside the regular
immigration quota system. "Sup-
port for this bill would further evi-
dence New York's appreciation for
the contribution of immigrants to
our city and nation," Clingan said.
Gahal May Rejoin Govt.
if Mrs. Meir Voids Talks
LONDON (JTA)—A leader of
the Gahal opposition party said
his faction might return to Pre-
mier Golda Meir's coalition if her
government renounced the Jar-
ring talks and insisted on direct
negotiations for a peace treaty.
Haim Landau, of Gahal's mili-
tant Herut wing, conceded that
there was no chance of this hap-
pening as yet, but claimed that
recent public opinion polls "show
that we are gaining political
ground in the country all the
time."

`Mystery Jewish Leader'
Seen Pressuring Nixon
WASHINGTON (ZINS) — Colum-
nists Evans and Novak report that
an important Jewish personality
had petitioned President Nixon to
exert more pressure on Israel to
mollify her "stubborn" stance in
the current diplomatic contest with
the Arab world.
This move was attributed to a
desire on the part of the anony-
mous "Jewish leader" to avoid
fanning anti-Israel sentiment here.
There is some suspicion that the
anonymous "leading figure"
doesn't exist. Observers are ask-
ing if there is any basis in fact
for the report, why wasn't the
name of this Jewish personality
made public?
