Emil F. Stern, who became a
successful mechanical engineer
after conquering deafness, died
April 17 in Milwaukee. Mr. Stern,
75, was the father of Detroiter
Burton Stern.
Although he was born with a
severe hearing loss, Mr. Stern's
parents weren't aware of his hand-
icap until he was 3. He began to
wear a hearing aid in his early
40s.
A graduate of the school for the
deaf, he received a bachelors de-
gree in mechanical engineering
from the University of Wisconsin
and during his senior year was an
instructor in the school of engi-
neering.
Mr. Stern and a friend formed
a Chicago consulting engineer-
ing firm, and he returned to
Milwaukee in 1936 to be a desigi
engineer for an automotive cor-
poration.
He testified many times before
state legislative committees con-
cerning appropriations for educa-
tion of the deaf.
Among his many memberships
were the Zionist Organization of
America and Temple Menorah.
Survivors besides his son in De-
troit are his wife, Betty, a son,
Marshall of Chicago; a daughter,
Mrs. Alan (Alice) Briskin of St.
Louis Park, Minn. ; one brother,
three sisters and 11 grandchildren.
Israelis Told They Can
List Sharm el-Sheikh as
a Permanent Address
JERUSALEM (JTA)-Israel con-
tinued to demonstrate that it has
no intention of giving up Sharm
el-Sheikh, the strongpoint on the
southern tip of Sinai that com-
mands the Straits of Than.
For the first time since its seiz-
ure by Israeli forces in June 1967,
Sharm el-Sheikh has been listed as
a civilian address. An official of
the interior ministry visited there
to advise Israeli civilian residents
that they could have Sharm el-
Sheikh listed as their permanent
address on their identity cards.
The ministry's office in Sharm
el-Sheikh moved from temporary
quarters to a permanent location -4*
about three weeks ago, it was dis- ,
closed.
The health ministry is about to
open a civilian dispensary in the
Sinai town.
Disclosure of the latest develop-
ments followed an announcement
by Housing Minister Zev Sharef
that civilian housing at Sharm el- -
Sheikh was in an "advanced stage'L,
of planning.
