JERUSALEM — Israel's success-
ful integrated pest control pro-
gram, based on principles devel-
oped and taught at the Hebrew
University's faculty of agriculture
at Rehovot, is now serving as- a
model to the entire world, includ-
ing such highly developed areas
as California.
Prof. Isaac Harpaz, professor of
agricultural entomology at the He-
brew University, explains that "in-
tegrated pest control aims at util-
izing all natural and other agents
for the control of pests in a har-
monious way so that the agents
should not antagonize one an-
other."
It is particularly important that
the method of control should hit
straight at the target and kill
only a specific pest, he adds.
Integrated pest control replaces
the previous methods employing
chemicals which increased the
amount of pesticide residues in the
environment.
Prof. Harpaz's interest in pro-
tecting the environment is shared
by many of his colleagues at the
Hebrew University and, at the be-
ginning of this academic year, an
interdepartmental committee was
set up to formulate a program of
research and teaching in environ-
mental problems.
Headed by Prof. David Amiran,
professor of geography and former
vice president of the university,
the committee encompasses the fa-
culties of natural science, social
sciences, medicine and law, as well
as the faculty of agriculture, which
is represented by Prof. Harpaz.

A group of 30 American social
scientists and educators toured the
Hebrew University this week as
part of an interdisciplinary semi-
nar sponsored by the State Uni-
versity of New York.
The seminar, led by Prof. Yonah
Alexander, professor of interna-
tional studies at SUNY, was a 10-
day program of lecture-discussions
and visits designed to highlight
aspects of Israeli life and institu-
tions of interest to social scientists.
