Historic Moment for Israel's Chief Rabbi: Sounding Shofar at Jerusalem's Liberation The proudest day in the life of Gen. Shiomo Goren, chief chaplain of the Israel Defense Forces, was on June 7, 1967, the third day of the Six-Day War, when Jerusalem was reunited. Gen. Goren will be guest speaker at the Israel anni- versary dinner May 13 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. At 10:15 in the morning of the third day of the war, the Star of David was unfurled over the Temple Mount. The Western Wall got a misty-eyed honor guard. A Zahal unit fired a volley. Para- troopers hugged each other. A broad-shouldered paratrooper kept running about, screaming: "Jeru- salem is ours! Jerusalem is ours!" Raphael Bashan describes the scene in his book "The Victory:" "An imposing, fiery figure appears on the scene—the chief chaplain of Zahal — Brig. Gen. Shlome Goren. In one hand he is holding a small Scroll of the Law in a purple coverlet. With the other he whips out a ram's horn, raises it to his lips, and a blast rolls like thunder through the enclosure. `These moments,' cries the Chief Chaplain, 'will be inscribed in the annals of our people for genera- tions to come! Zahal has raised the flag of Israel's sovereignty over the Temple Mount, site of the nation's glory. The Wall is ours. We shall never give it up.' "A few minutes later come the chief of staff, General Itzhak Rabin; the assistant chief of staff, Brig. Gen. Chaim Bar-Lev; Brig. Gen. Uzzi Narkiss, head of the Central Command; senior officers and the soldiers who achieved the breakthrough. They all join in an inspired Minha service. "And this is the proclamation issued by Rabbi Goren in honor of the day: Fighting men of Israel, beloved of the nation, crowned with val- orous victory. The Lord be with you, stal- warts of the host ! I am address- ing you from the court of the Western Wall, remnant of our Temple. Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, said your Lord. This is the day for which we have long- ed. Let us be glad and rejoice in its salvation. The vision of all the genera- tions has come to pass before our eyes. The City of God, the site of the Temple, the Temple Mount and the Western Wall, symbol of the Messianic redemp- tion of our people, have this day been redeemed by you, valorous men of Zahat. Today you have made good the oath of genera- tions: "If I forget thee, 0 Jeru- salem, so let my right hand be forgotten." And indeed, we have not forgotten thee, 0 Jerusalem, our sacred city and home of our glory, and our right hand—the right hand of God—has wrought this historic redemption. Whose heart will fail to sing and resound at the news of this redemption. Now there will be opened the Gates of Zion and of ancient Jerusalem. The paths to the Western Wall will be open to the prayers of its sons and lib- erators, here, and of the Jewish people everywhere as they ascend to make their supplica- tion before the Creator. The Divine Spirit, which has never detached itself from the Western Wall, now goes forth be- fore the hosts of Israel in a pillar of fire, illuminating for us the road to victory, and surrounding us with clouds of honor, before all men. Happy are we who have earned this noblest hour in the history of our People. And to the nations of the world we say: We shall protect with dignity and with honor, all the sites sanc- tified to all people of peace and trust, and their gates will be open wide to men of all faiths. Dear sons and so l d i e r s! Through you this nation has achieved this highest of privi- leges. The prayers of generations and the visions of the Prophets have come to life; "For Thou, 0 Lord, didst set it afire, and with fire willt Thou build it, as it is said: 'And I shall be unto her, said the Lord, 'an encircling wall of fire, and within her I shall be honored.' " Blessed be Thou, 0 Lord, comforter of Zion and builder of Jerusalem. 1,77r7tg: And to Zion and the remnant of our Temple we bring these tidings: The sons have returned to within their boundaries. Our feet are 720W standing in thy gates, 0 Jerusalem, the City now joined together with the new Jewish Jerusalem, the City beau- tiful, joy of all the land, capital of eternal Israel. In the name of the communi- ties of Israel, here and in the Diaspora, I pronounce with su- preme joy, the Benediction: "Blessed be Thou, 0 Lord our God, King of the universe, for having given us life, fulfillment and the attainment of this mo- ment."
