"And I will turn the captivity of my people Israel,
And they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them
And I will plant them upon their land,
And they shall no more be plucked up
Out of their land which I have given them,
Saith the Lord thy God."

A Salute to Israel's
23rd Anniversary

Prophecy and Fulfillment .. .
Zionist Humanitarianism

"And it shall come to pass in that day,
That the Lord will set his hand again the second time
To recover the remnant of His people . . .
And he will set up an ensign for the nations,
And will assemble the dispersed of Israel,
And gather together the scattered of Judah
From the four corners of the earth."
--Isaiah xi:11,12.

A Weekly Review

VOL. LI X. No. 7

"Zion is memory, admonition, promise. Zion is the
foundation stone of the messianic upbuilding of humanity.
It is the unending task of the Jewish people."
—Martin Buber in "Zion and Youth," 1918.
"Zionism was the sabbath of my life."
—Theodor Herzl, Jan. 24, 1902

"March forward, Jews of all lands! The ancient fatherland
of yours is calling you . . . March forward, ye noble hearts!
The day on which the Jewish tribes return to their fatherland
will be epoch-making in the history of humanity. Oh, how will
the East tremble at your coming! How quickly, under the in-
fluence of labor and industry, will the enervation of the people
vanish, in the land where voluptuousness, idleness and robbery
have held sway for thousands of years."
—Moses Hess, in "Rome and Jerusalem," 1862.

"Loyalty to America demands that each American Jew be-
come a Zionist."
—Louis D. Brandeis, in "The Jewish Problem," 1915.

"Zionism, as conceived and in part executed by Theodor
Herzl, was the half-conscious instinct of a people integrating
past and future together into the totality of the will to live and
" be itself and only itself."
—Stephen S. Wise, in "A Century of Jewish Progress," 1933.

"What is needed is the leaven—what is needed is the seed
of fire. The heritage of Israel is beating in the pulses of millions;

it lives in their veins as a power without understanding, like
the morning exultation of herds; it is the inborn half of memory,
moving as in a dream with writings on the walls, which it sees
dimly but cannot divide into speech. Let the torch of visible
community be lit! Let the reason of Israel disclose itself in a
great outward deed, and let there be another great migration,
another choosing of Israel to be a nationality whose members
may still stretch to the ends of the earth . . . but who will have
a national- hearth and a tribunal of national opinion'

,

- -George Eliot in "Daniel Deronda," 1876.

"I am told Zionism is a Utopia: I do not know-;,,perhaps.
But inasmuch. as I see in this Utopia an unconquerable thirst
for freedom, one for which the people will suffer, it is for me a
reality. With all my heart I pray that the Jewish people, like
the rest of humanity, may be given spiritual strength to labor
for its dream and to establish it in flesh and blood."
—Ma-xim Gorky, 1902.

Eban Stresses Favorable M. E.
Climate, Continued U. S. Amity

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Foreign Minister Abba Eban spoke to the foreign press corps
Tuesday in what observers regarded as a considered attempt to create a favorable climate for
the forthcoming visit of U.S. Secretary of State William P. Rogers. Eiban played down reports
of a widening rift between Jerusalem and Washington. "There is no confrontation," he said.
"Not a single word in the dictionary is less suitable to describe the situation than this."
Eban claimed that Israel's relations with the U.S. were "overwhelmingly positive." He
said the U.S. was "actively strengthening us militarily, economically and politically." The
foreign minister conceded that there are basic issues on which Israel and the U.S. differ. But
he gave no hint that these included the Rogers plan itself and the Rogers thesis that borders
were less important than international guarantees. "We hope Mr. Rogers' visit will make our
views clear to him and afford him the opportunity to regard us not only as a problem but as
an existing reality," Eban said.
He stressed to the newsmen that Israel has already made two major concessions in the
current exchange of views for an interim agreement to reopen the Suez Canal. Eban said Israel
offered to consent to the reopening of the canal and offered a "redisposition" of her troops.
He said Israel did not make cessation of belligerency a condition for reopening the waterway.
That, he said, was only a legal term. Israel's interest is that fighting does not break out again.
"We shall not give up our strategic situation and then have to fight again under much less
favorable conditions," he said.

Israel to Be Rogers' Last Stop on Mission
WASHINGTON (JTA) — State Department sources told
the JTA that there has been no change in Secretary Rogers'
Middle East itinerary. They were commenting on reports that
Rogers might advance his visit to Israel. The sources said
that as far as they are aware, Israel remains the last stop on
the secretary's five-nation tour unless there has been some
last-minute "very radical" change.
Larry Pomeroy, CBS Radio news correspondent, reported
from Tel Aviv that "reliable sources" in Israel said "there is
reason to believe" that Rogers will visit Israel before Egypt to
"dramatize the U. S. move to narrow the negotiating gap
between Israel and Egypt."
Rogers announced the plans for his Mid East visit at a
press conference here last Friday. He said he would visit
Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Israel beginning
this weekend, following his participation in a meeting of the
Central Treaty Organization (CENTO) powers in Ankara, Tur-
key. Rogers flew to London Monday on the first leg of his trip.
State Department sources would not say in what order the
secretary of state would visit the Middle East countries but

versary ceremonies. A third function will be the conclusion of the Israel
Trade Fair, which has drawn national attention as a developing effort of
assistance to Israel economically.

Trade Fair Closes Sunday Youth Spearhead Israel

Thousands of Detroiters evidenced their interest in
Israel's productivity during the Israel Trade Fair which
started last Saturday night when more than 800 attended
the initial function. On Sunday the attendees numbered
in the thousands.
Sponsored by the Detroit Zionist Federation in co-
operation with the Jewish Community Center and with
the encouragement of the American Israel Chamber of
Commerce, the noteworthy Trade Fair will close on Sun-
day with events that will be linked with the celebration of
Israel's 23rd anniversary.
There were hundreds of buyers of the many Israel

Anniversary Fete Sunday

The community celebration of Israel's 23rd anniver-
sary of statehood will be observed Sunday in a diversified
program of entertainment for all ages at the Jewish
Center.
Sponsored by the Jewish Community Council and
Detroit Zionist Federation, the celebration will begin for-
mally with an 11 a.m. program indoors, coordinated by

Campaign Closes Wednesday

In the five days remaining in the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign-Israel Emergency Fund, a special appeal for a
prompt response with their contributions has gone forth
to the 4,000 prospects who have not yet pledged to continue
the pattern of generosity which has marked this year's
effort.
At the final workers' meeting last Sunday, a report
of $11,605,000 raised to date was made to a capacity
group of workers. This is $2,345,000 more than the same
19,000 contributors gave last year.
Campaign chairmen Meyer M. Fishman and Max M.
Shaye said they are hopeful that more than 25,000 pledges
will be made to the drive this year, with the problems of
Israel and its people at a crisis.
The victory dinner scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Wednesday
at Cong. Bnai David, will be an opportunity for workers
in the campaign organization to get together to hear the
results of their many hours of work, the co-chairmen said.
