Representing the Manhattan Athletic Club, Myers crossed the Atlantic in 1881 to prove to the English that American clockers weren't mad as had been sug- gested in some British news- papers. And show them he did. He bettered his own 880 mark and lowered the 440 record to 48.6. He also became the first foreign runner to win a British national track title. In all, be- tween 1879 and 1884, Myers won 15 American, 10 Canadian and three British national titles at distances from 100 to 880-yards. Myers had his first meeting with Britain's great distance ace Walter George in 1882 at the Polo Grounds in New York. Although in ill health, Myers won the 880, then lost twice to George at three- quarters of a mile and the mile run. The two runners resumed their rivalry in 1886 after both had become professionals. This time it was all Myers as he swept all three events at Madison Square Garden. The two met again in Australia in 1887 with Myers again the victor. 'Myers retired from track in 1888 and drifted into horse racing before he died in 1899. With the outdoor track season about to begin, and the Olympic Games . only a year away, we can't help but wonder if the American Jewish community will ever again produce a Lon Myers or an Abel Kiviat. These two men—one who competed almost 100 years ago, and the other more than 50—were the last American Jews to make it really big in track. They were the Jim Ryuns and Martin Li- quoris of their day. Lawrence (Lon) Myers, one of the great names of track history, was born in Richmond, Va. in 1858. He began his track career in New York City in 1887 and was an almost instant success. A year later he amazed everyone when he became the first runner in history to better 50 seconds for 440-yards and won three American titles—the 220, 440 and 880-yards —at the National AAU champion- ships. In 1880 he established an American record in the mile run; set a new world record in the 880, and tied the world mark for 100 yards. He bettered his AAU cham- pionship record of the previous year by capturing the 100, 220, 440 and 880 titles, all on the same day. A week later he repeated these triumphs at the Canadian Tel Aviv Museum Shows New Halls Private Facilities for Party & Occasions New Center's Finest Restaurant .. A New York City high school champion, Kiviat won his first national title in Canada in 1909 while represent. ing the famous Irish-American Athletic Club. He did extremely well running indoors and in 1911 became the first to win two na- tional indoor titles in the same year. The Olympic Games were scheduled for Sweden the follow- ing year and Kiviat was determin- ed to make the team. At the East- ern Olympic trials in Boston he set a new world mark of 3:55.8 for the 1,500-meter final. He grab- bed the lead on the final lap and held it until a tall Englishman, Arnold Strode-Jackson, nipped him at the tane. "What was I waiting for?" Kivat said later, "It was the only conservative race I ever ran in my life." He repeated his indoor double championship in 1913 and estab- lished a new world indoor mark of 4:18.2 that same year. In a career that lasted until 1925, Ki- viat won nine U.S. national indoor and outdoor championships and three Canadian titles. For many years he has served as an official at New York City track meets. Myers and Kiviat were great ones. Will we ever see their like again? • GUIDE W'ward BLOOMFIELD 2 blks. S. 15 Mi.
