There are some commentaries who claim that the word "Av" which means "Father" and the second word which has the letters "Yod" and "Beth" indicates t h e number twelve. This would signify that the month of Nisan is the "Father" or the "Head" of all the other months of the year. Actually, in most of Biblical literature, the months are referred to by numbers giving their successive relation- ship to the month of Nisan which is classified as the first month. The month of Nisan is the begin- ning or "head" of the month be- cause it is the month during which the Exodus took place when the enslaved Hebrews left Egypt. This event, being so central in Jewish theology, was emphasized as the first month since the peoplehood of Israel was confirmed by the event of the Exodus which indi- cated the intention of the Almighty to secure the destiny of His chosen people. The Passover festival itself takes up eight more days of the month plus the day before Passover, which are festive days. This throws a cast of joy over the whole month which is thus char- acterized as a festive month in which penitential prayers are de- leted so that a mood of festivity can endure for the entire month. During this month of Nisan the usual penitential prayers in the daily services are omitted. Most of the month has days in which festivity is noted. The first 12 days of the month are the days in which the 12 tribes offered special sacrifices in the Tabernacle of the Wilderness in the spirit of dedication in the new JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER Room 8 10 Mile' Rd.
