Prof. Mikhail Zand, a young
Soviet Jewish academician, whose
recent arrest was strongly pro-
tested by colleagues abroad, has
taken critically ill and been ousted
from his university post by a vote
of his fellow professors, who
branded him a "traitor."
This information was disclosed
this week by Prof. Herbert Paper,
professor of linguistics and Near
Eastern languages at the Univer-
sity of Michigan, who is a friend
of Zand.
Paper said that Zand, a young
specialist in Arabic and Persian
literature at the Institute for East-
ern Studies in Moscow, was ar-
rested while participating in a
peaceful protest in Moscow. Two
participants were sent to an in
sane asylum and 38 others to
prison for brief terms on a charge
of "minor hooliganism."
Hearing of the action, Paper
tried to gain support among his
colleagues to appeal on Zand's
behalf. Now, Paper has learned
from sources in London that
Zand, released from jail, has
been subjected to new inter-
rogations, and that his fellow
academicians voted for ouster,
with only two supporting him.
A Jewish apologist for the Soviet
regime, the Orientalist Dr. Joseph
Braginsky, was the chief instigator
of charges against Zand, accord-
ing to Paper. The latter had met
Zand through Braginsky.
(According to the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency, Jewish sources
said Braginsky spoke out against
Zand after being urged by Israel's
pro-Moscow Rakach Communists
to act to prevent Zand from going
to Israel. Last month Zand inter-
rupted a pro-Soviet presentation
in Moscow's Choral Synagogue by
60 Soviet Jewish leaders, charging
them with being unrepresentative
of Soviet Jewry and apologists for
the Kremlin.
(Zand, a journalist, was dis-
missed from the Soviet journalists'
association and subsequently was
made an honorary member of the
Israeli journalists' organization.
The two staff members of the in-
stitute who refused to speak out
against Zand were identified as
Yitzhak Filstinski, who is Jewish,
and Tatyana Grigorveva, who is
not.)
On March 12, Zand formally
submitted the required papers re-
questing exit visas for himself and
his family to be united with rela-
tives in Israel.
Paper and Zand have corres-
ponded in Yiddish since meeting
at a conference in Iran several
years ago. Zand has been in poor
health, Paper said.
