rortantation
from the Rabbis of Greater Detroit
L'shana Habah B'Yerushalayim—Next year in Jerusalem—the closing prayer of nearly 2,000 years of the Passover
seder uttered by generations who had little hope of ever seeing the Golden City. It was faith in their dream which
sustained them—and faith that nourished the dream.
The traditional prayer took on a new meaning 23 years ago when the dream of a reborn Israel became a
reality.
But, as throughout our history, the right to that dream, the human right of Jewish survival, is still being
challenged today.
Because it is challenged, the State of Israel has called upon all Israeli-based organizations to stop fund-
raising in America in 1971. It will take all the country's resources to defend the dream.
This means that world Jewry is being asked to ass sume the entire responsibility—not just part—of taking
care of the 50,000 immigrants expected this year from Eastern Europe, France, Iran and other countries, as
well as the thousands of former refugees in Israel who still need help.
At the same time we must continue to offer hope to the Jews who are still living in countries where they
are not free.
The services of our own community here in Detroit must also -be kept strong, giving aid to those of our
neighbors beset by human problems and strengthening Jewish life at home.
The increased challenges in 1971 mean that we must increase our commitment to the ideal of freedom
for all Jews and a secure and meaningful life in Israel.
In the name of the courageous Israelis who are fighting for a peaceful existence, in the name of our
breathren who are still unwilling residents in hostile lands, in the name of our forefathers who nourished the
dream of L'shana Habah B'Yerushalayim in their dark ghettoes, we, the Rabbis of the Congregational Council,
call upon each of you to help make their dreams a reality through your redoubled generous support of the
1971 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund.
