The Best of Everything
By Danny Raskin
BACK IN 1927, Samuel's Bros.
in the Eastern Market was born
. . . and today is still flourishing
as one of the nation's most popular
eateries of its kind . . . open from
3 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., serving ex-
cellent food (blintzes, pancakes,
corned beef, lox & e g g s, fried
matzo, pickled fish, gefilte fish,
baked fish, etc.) and sandwiches
. . • Still going strong, Samuel's
Bros. Cafeteria in the Eastern
Market, run by Morris Samuel and
son, Ira, is a veritable melting pot
of all types of people . . . Folks
from every walk of life, downtown
or 20 miles away, come to enjoy
the yum yum food . . . Before
burning down in 1941, Samuel's
Bros. was part service and cafe-
teria . . . Rebuilt two months later
it was as a full cafeteria . . . Mor-
ris remembers back when Tom
Borman, Nate and Jack Lurie, the
Shayes', Norman Cottler and
others used to come early in the
morn for their Eastern Market
buying, and always stopped to eat
at Samuel's Bros.
THE SIGN IS UP now outside
. .. and its officially Pietro's . . .
formerly Hugo's at the Park Shel-
ton on Woodward and Kirby : . .
The indoor parking there is a geat
asset!
APRIL 25 IS THE big date
they'll be mounting that stuffed
record-breaking sailfish Jimmy
Katz caught while vacationing in
Acapulco with wife Sally
. . . The 9'7" flying battler will
hang on a 12-foot wall of their Oak
Park delicatessen in beauteous
momento of a 25-minute fight
tougher than any Jimmy ever had
in his ring days!
"EAST INDIES" (name of
Indonesia when it was a Dutch
colony) at Mario's of Windsor on
Oullette St., a taste bud tingler, is
an education all its own!
THE SUSSEX HOUSE restaur-
ant-cocktail lounge on W. 10 Mile

populaity with its private affairs
