Deaf Learn •to Make Music in Israel LA Service Aids Jobless Professionals LOS ANGELES ( J TA )—Des crib - ing the jobless situation for engi- neers in the San Fernando Valley as "staggering," the district direc- tor of the Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles said that when JFS officials now examine programs for the unemployed, "we are no longer referring solely to families living along the poverty line. Now we mean people who are used to earning $12,000 to $15,000 and more." Citing in particular the difficul- ties of engineers who have lost work because of cutbacks and can- cellations of aerospace contracts, Alice Wolfson said the jobless problem had produced a series of downward-spiraling troubles. She said wage earners who would in normal times be holding jobs as gas station attendants or shoe salesmen have been displaced by jobless engineers "many of whom will do anything just to work" and "the spiral of unemployment filters down until there are some people who simply have nothing to do and nowhere to go." vf .'"etb The "NIV" School in Tel Aviv is the first in Israel to have introduced speech therapy for deaf and hard-of-hearing children in the elementary school system. It is one of a wide range of services and facilities for children with speech and hearing disordlers which Malben, the JDC health and welfare program in Israel, is helping to develop throughout the country. Here, members of the school's percussion band respond to their teacher's direction. The deaf and hard-of-hearing children are sensitive to the vibrations of drums, tambourines and cymbals and take great pride in their performance. 4. (. 14 i :::,,MY'llfe+C. OFiV
