Allied Campaigners Must Contact More Than
12,000 Additional Donors to Assure Drive's Goal

At least 12,000 of previous years'
contributors and several thousand
more non-givers are yet to be con-

this year's drive at the dinner
meeting April 1 at Cong. Shaarey

night on his 60th birthday, an-
nounced that the. total reached then
was $10,640,000. He pointed out
that at the similar opening meet-
ing last year the total was $0,040,-
000. Confidence was expressed that
a $15,000,000 goal may be reached

this year, compared with last year's
final attainment of $11,600,000.
At the April 1 meeting, the wom-
en's and junior divisions exceeded
their last year's totals, and several
other divisions are approaching
this mark.
Last year, 24,596 contributors
were enrolled. Thus far, the pres-
e n t enrollment approximates
14,000. The 12,000 more to be
reached and the large number
of other non-givers presents a
challenge to the Greater Detroit
Jewish community to provide the
vast sums needed to assure Is-
rael's security, Fishman and
Shaye said.
The two co-chairmen referred to
the need to keep Israel's doors
open for the large numbers clam-
oring to acquire haven in Israel,
from Russia and the Moslem coun-
tries. They stated: "To deny the
Law of Return to a single soul is
to diminish all of Israel. Now is
the time to give to the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign to assure the con-
tinuation of immigration." They
added:
"In the 20-odd years since Is-
rael's birth, her population has
more than tripled. Two-thirds of
that growth is due to immigration.
The impact is equivalent to having
accepted 300,000,000 immigrants
to America.
"But the immigrant problem is
far more complex than even those
startling numbers indicate. Its dif-
ficulties are most obvious in Israel,
but it reaches far beyond her
borders.
"Problem: Dependence. If the
immigrants who have reached Is-
rael were all able to support them-
selves, the difficulties of providing
for them until they were able to
function would still strain all her
facilities and resources. But into
Israel's open arms there have come
vast numbers of human beings
broken in body and mind . . . il-
literate, unskilled, aged. Their de-
pendence is permanent.
"Problem: Unpredictability : Dif-
ficult as the problems of migra-
lion are ordinarily, these particu-
lar ones are complicated by their
unpredictability. Where . . . when
. . . for how many will the next
crisis occur? How urgent will their
evacuation be? No one knows.
"The flight of 3,500 from Libya
in June 1967, was foreseeable.
The Russian invasion of Czecho-
slovakia in 1968 which caused the
flight of 4,500 was not. Nor was
the suddenness of kotand's vio-
lent increase in official anti-
Semitism from which 12,000 more
fled.
"Problem: The marooned. For
confused and complex reasons —
some physical, some psychological
— thousands of Jews cannot bring
themselves to leave -their familiar

$7 Million in Bonds Sold
at Philadelphia Dinner

PHILADELPHIA (JTA)—A din-
ner here recently raised $7,-
000,000 for the Israel Bond Organi-
zation, a record for a single fund-
raising event by the group.
The 800 attendees heard speeches
by Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey (D-
Minn.) and Itzhak Rabin, Israeli
ambassador to the U.S. Humphrey
declared that "It is necessary that
America show not only affection
for Israel but also our assistance,
for we have a stake in Israel."
Rabin observed: "All that we
ask from our neighbors, all that
we ask from the world is peace,
a real peace . . . We want peace
that will be achieved and main-
tained by those who are in this
conflict. This is the meaning of a
real peace."

The first two groups in the

Allied Jewish Campaign to ex-

ceed last year's pledges were the
junior and women's divisions.
Reporting for them at the open-
ing campaign dinner were Mich-
ael Aladdin and Mrs. Morris J.
Brandwine. The junior division
reported raising $54,097 — 34 per
cent more than last year. Mrs.
Brandwine reported that the
women had already raised
$1,200,00 — 3 per cent more than
last year, with 2,500 yet to be
contacted.

ways of life, wretched though they

of Jewish communities exist. There,
children and youth are objects of
particular concern. And there, a
tedious but desperate battle on
their behalf against malnutrition,
disease and ignorance goes on
day after endless day.

we done? Hardly. For, apart from
the 3,000,000 Jews living on the
razor's edge of Russia's sufferance,
there are 600,000 others who may
