Youth

Mel Happenings

Aunt Sarah, it would have to be

By BETH LIBERSON

On March 30, there was no longer
an air of nervousness throughout
the school, for the school produc-
tion of the three-act play "The In-
visible Clowns" was behind us.
There were two performances.
The lead for the Sunday afternoon
performance was Danny Schnip-
per, while Jimmy Caplan per-
formed the role on Monday night.
Both boys did an excellent job of
portraying the crippled orphan boy
who suffers all his life until he
goes to Israel with Youth Aliya
and finally finds happiness.
The title role of Glum Face was
played by Lisa Greenberg, whose
wonderful acting ability and sor-
row-filled voice really had you
believing that she was indeed a
clown who liked nothing better
than to cry her eyes out. The role
of the other clown, Happy Eye,
was played first by Barbara Eskin
on Sunday and by Rebecca Segal
on Monday. Both girls did a mar-
velous job. Their antics provided
a lightness and gaiety to the pro-
duction which brought chuckles
from the audience.

Ilana Bar-Levav played the
part of the orphan's aunt. She
was so good that if there really
was a Hananyah and he had an

Ilana.

Other roles which were also
beautifully played were taken by
Mark Merkow as Hananyah's un-
cle, Matthew Rose, Zachary Levey,
Robert Schloss, Ora Glaser, Rob-
ert Mattier, Eileen Wainer, Elana
Strom and David Schostak.
The people behind the scenes
deserve as much credit as the
players for making this an out-
standing production. All the stag-
ing was done by the junior high
students themselves under the di-
rection of Steve Mattler and Bill
Lansat. All the business arrange-
ments were handled by Robert
Schostak, his assistant Elliot Baum
and their crew. The very effective
lighting work was by Rick Margo-
lin and Gary Ran. Makeup was
created by Linia Harvey. Mrs.
Myron Spalter designed and made
the clown costumes.
The assistant director through-
out the months of rehearsal and
preparation was Ilana Bar-Levav,
and, of course, the entire produc-
tion was undertaken under the
guidance and supervision of Mrs.
Goldie Eskin.

Teen's 'Mown Korps'
to Entertain in Parade

"Beejay" and his Klown Korps
will provide comic merriment dur-
ing Oak Park's annual July 4
parade when the city celebrates
its 25th birthday. "Beejay," in
reality Barnett J. Leet, 14, has
participated in numerous parades
and programs throughout Michi-
gan since he was 9.
A student at Frost Junior High
School, Barnett recently created an
"ecolo-pop art" sculpture entitled
"The Worlds of Man," which has
become a permanent fixture in the
Francis Scott Key Elementary
School.
