Walker, District Sales Manager it is much more. It is a definitive work on psychiatry and psychia- trists. It traces the life and strug- gles of Dr. Freud. It is history in the sense that it covers the events of his lifetime and depicts the Jew- ish experience, the anti-Semitic trends, the battle Freud had with his pupils who took over leadership in psychiatric practices and in their presentations to the world. In the Irving Stone style, it is an immense work, going into de- tail about Freud—his childhood, his family, his marriage, his ex- periments. Scores of case histories explain the significance of psychiatry, the manner in which Freud began to resort to hypnotism, later turning to the explorations that made his name world famous. Many references are made to the anti-Semitic evidences in Austria, to the prejudices that arose, to the trials and tribulations in the life of a man who gave the world so much and who struggled to attain his goal. He was a Jew with interests (hat varied. He played a role in Bnai Brith, studied Jewish humor, evaluated Jewish conditions. All of his experiences reached their climax when Nazism struck Austria, when Nazi brutes invaded his home. He was kept a prisoner in his home until he consented to leave his native land. He objected to running away from the danger and finally, when matters became unbear- able, he yielded to entreaties from Americans and Britons and left Austria for England. The final chapter, describing his last years, under Nazism in Vienna, is a most moving description of a great man's sufferings under oppression. Much of the story is about his wife. the former Martha Bernays, of the eminent Bernays family. It was a life of devotion and dedica- tion, and the Jewish aspect is of special interest. The biographer, in this magnifi- cent work, describes the wooing of Martha, the final steps that led to the marriage, Martha's desire for a Jewish marriage, Sigmund's ob- jections to a religious ceremony and how the religious adherence was retained. Martha is quoted to have told her fiance: "Sig, if the ceremony is performed at City Hall our mar- riage will not be legal in Austria." Whereupon the author relates the following: "What are you talking about? That's absolute nonsense !" "Yes, dear, I knew you'd think so. That's why I had the law copied out. One of my cousins found it. Here, read this: it says that no marriage can be consid- ered legal in the Austro-Hungar- ian Empire unless there is a re- ligious ceremony." "Now, Martha, you know we don't have time to be converted to Catholicism." His eyes twin- kled. "I'm being converted to mar- riage, and that's quite enough ad- venture for the moment. We can be married in a ceremony at the City Hall. But after that we will have to come back here and go through a religious ritual. Until a rabbi signs our papers we are still only affianced." He saw she was not to be put off and stormed through the gar- den, flinging phrases of protesta- tion over his shoulder. Though Jakob Freud had belonged to a synagogue in Freiburg, where he had had his two sons by Sally Kanner Bar Mitzva, he had not obliged either Sigmund or Alex- ander to go through the ritual which took place at the age of groom with wine and your ordeal 13 and admitted the young will be over:" boy to manhood.
