sponsors obtained messages of sup-
port from a number of political
figures. These included sponsors
Hatfield and Bellmon and Senators
Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass) and
Adlai E. Stevenson (D-Ill.). Stev-
enson, however, later disavowed
the anti-Israel slurs made at the
rally.
While the announced themes of
the evening were "justice" and
"love," it is perhaps noteworthy
that none of the speakers talked of
peace — genuine peace negotiated
between the Arabs and Israel. Be-

the meeting should have surprised
no one. The sponsoring groups
were American Friends of the Mid-
dle East (AFME), Americans for
Middle East Understanding (AM-
EU), American Near East Ref-
ugee Aid, Inc. (ANERA); Ameri-
can Middle East Policy Council,
Inc., and the Middle East Affairs
Council.
The first two of the above, AFME
and AMEU, have been leading dis-
tributors of pro-Arab, anti-Israel
materials on the American scene.
The third, ANERA, was formed
early in 1968 to "provide subsist-
ence aid, medical aid and educa-
tional opportunities for Arab ref-
ugees in the Near East," but on a
number of occasions has engaged
in active political pressure to per-
suade the U.S. government to cut
off all aid to Israel.
The address given for the ca-
thedral rally in advance adver-
tising was that of ANERA,
whose executive director, John
P. Richardson, was secretary of
the rally's organizing committee.
One of the rally speakers was
ANERA's president, Dr. John H.
Davis, who told those assembled
that as far as the Palestinian
Arabs were concerned, the very
creation of the state of Israel
was a "catastrophe." (Neither
Davis nor any other speaker ap-
peared to think that "justice"
required recognition of the fact
that it was the Arab states' re-
jection of the UN Partition Plan
of 1947 that robbed the Palestin-
ians of a homeland.)
Among the well-known sponsors
of the rally were Senators Mark
Hatfield (R-Ore.) and Henry Bell-
mon (R-Kan.); Dr. Cynthia Wedel,
president of the National Council
of Churches; Erwin D. Canham,
editor-in-chief of the Christian Sci-
ence Monitor; Dr. Andrew Cordier,
former president of Columbia Uni-
versity; Most Rev. Edward E.
Swanstrom, Roman Catholic auxil-
iary bishop of New York, and Rev.
Edward L. R. Elson, pastor of
Washington's National Presbyte-
rian Church. Rev. Elson, who also
is chaplain of the U.S. Senate, has
been chairman of the National
Council of the pro-Arab AFME,
and served as chairman of the
cathedral rally's sponsoring com-
mittee.
