Israeli authorities have learned
of new terrorist concentrations
in southern Lebanon, apparently
in preparation for increased
activity against Israel in that
sector. Israeli sources said the
terrorists have been forced into
Lebanon by the crackdown in
Jordan and t h e restrictions
placed on their activities recently
by Syrian authorities. They are
said to be waiting for improved
weather to launch new incursions
against Israel.
Gen. Yeshayahu Gavish, former

ommander of Israel's southern
ommand, indicated that Israel's
it force would resume its in-depth
bombing of Egyptian targets should
hostilities be renewed along the
Suez Canal. The reserve officer
;aid Israel had absolutely no un-
Jertaking to limit its retaliatory
strikes to the canal zone, but pre-
licted that the present de facto
tease fire would be a prolonged
one.

Pope Says Christians,
Jews Have Special Ties

ROME (JTA) — Marshall Tito
of Yugoslavia referred to the Mid-
dle East situation during an audi-
ence with Pope Paul VI Monday.
Tito reportedly told the pontiff
that he considered the present
Middle East crisis dangerous and
that Yugoslavia was trying to help
in the search for a peaceful settle-
ment "so that the consequences of
the war of aggression of June
1967 can be eliminated and so that
all people and countries of that
region can live in peace and
security."

Terrorists' Upsurge
Expected by Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Israeli se-
curity forces are preparing for an
upsurge of terrorist activities
along the borders during the next
two months. The concentration of
guerrilla forces in southern Leba-
non and the March 26 clash in the
Jordan Valley in which three ter-
rorists were killed and three cap-
tured, appeared to be precursors
of things to come. Security circles
pointed out that the terrorists
usually time their activities to co-
incide with certain dates or events
in Israel.
They include the upcom-
ing Passover holiday with its large
influx of tourists, the traditional
three-day march starting next
Monday in which thousands of
Israelis walk to Jerusalem, and
Israel Independence Day cele-
brated this year on April 28 accord-
ing to the Hebrew calendar. Other
dates when terrorist attacks can
be excepted are May 15, which is
Israel Independence Day according
to the general calendar, and June
5, the anniversary of the outbreak
of the Six-Day War.

ROME (JTA) — A 27-member
delegation of American Jewish
Committee leaders, en route home
after spending two weeks in Israel,
had a special audience with Pope
Paul VI.
In a statement, read in English,
the pontiff said the Vatican Coun-
cil II lead the foundations for the
improvement of relations between
Catholics and the faithful of other
religions and added that "a special
link exists between Catholics and
Jews."
The Pope stated: "We want the
directive of the Vatican Council
to be put into practice so that
through the development of a bet-
ter understanding and a deeper
respect between Christians and
Jews, they may be able to work
together in the task of serving the
peace and well being of all man-
kind."
In reply, AJCommittee president
Bernard Abrams of West Hartford,
Conn., said that the AJCommittee
was "preoccupied with the recent
apparent misinterpretations of the
Vatican's position concerning Jeru-
salem and the holy places therein,
and would hope for a clarification
making the distinction between
the safeguarding of the holy places
and the status of the city as a
whole."

Win WW II Exemptions

Strikes Claim 390,000
Work Days in Israel

ROME (JTA) — Italian Jews
have won a 22-year struggle for
the same exemptions from World
War II property taxes granted
"citizens of the united nations"
by the Italian government in 1948.
They were the only Italians not
included in that category, and
sought a return of the property
confiscated under Mussolini's ra-
cial laws.
The foreign affairs commission,
endorsing the senate's new inter-
pretation of Article 78 of the peace
treaty between the Allies and Fas-
cist Italy, agreed to exempt Italian
Jews from the confiscations retro-
actively.

JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Israel
has lost a total of 390,000 work
days as a result of strikes by labor
in 1970, as compared with 102,000
work days lost in 1969. The cen-
tral statistical bureau, which dis-
closed these figures, stated that
the greatest number of strikes
were those directed against muni-
cipal and government institutions.
As usual, higher wage demands
formed the basis for the strikes.
More than 75 per cent of the
labor disputes were waged con-
trary to the wishes of the pro-
fessional organizations of the
