Nationally acknowledged as one
of the top social service executives
in this country, Avrunin's interpre-
tations of communal needs are ac-
cepted as guides by welfare funds
throughout the land. He is the
author of scores of articles which
were published in national social
service magazines and wide circu-
lation has been given his many
monographs.
Avrunin's professional member-
ships include: American Associa-
tion of Social Workers, Association
of Certified Social Workers, Inter-
national Conference of Social Work,
National Conference of Jewish
Communal Service, National Con-
ference of Social Work, Sigma
Delta Chi National Professional
Journalism Fraternity.
He recently was named a mem-
ber of the technical advisory com-
mittee of Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion.
He served as president of the
National Conference of Jewish
Communal Service in 1966-67
and in the same year, was co-
chairman of the International
Conference of Jewish Communal
Service.
In 1941, he was president of the
National Committee for Big Broth-
er and Big Sister Service. • He
served on editorial boards of Jew-
ish Siocial Service Quarterly of
professional currents department
from 1948 to 1955 and the Journal
of Jewish Communal Service.
He is a board member of the
Michigan Welfare League and co-
chairman of the housing committee
of the League. He is a member
also of the American Jewish Task
Force Committee on the Future of
the Jewish Community in America.
Avrunin, who participated in
several missions to Israel, has di-
rected a number of important
studies, especially one on voluntary
fund-raising for Israel under aus-
pices of the Jewish Agency for
mendations.
Avrunin is married to the former
Frieda Farbman. Their son Mark
is married to the former Barbara
Collens and their daughter Ste-
phanie is married to Barry Wald-
man. They have three grandchil-
_dren.
