Joel Sih!mer in August U-M Paper Seeks 'Disillusioned' Jews

The Ann Arbor Union of Jewish
Students at the University of Mich-
igan has launched an independent
newspaper dedicated "to raise the
level of Jewish consciousness
among its Jewish readers."
Called Nefesh, the eight-page
tabloid asserts that because of "in-
stitutional rigidity," such Jewish
institutions as the synagogue and
the Jewish community center
"have not succeeded in respond-
ing to the needs of Jewish youth."
Subsequently, Nefesh claims that
Jewish youth does not recognize
"the beauty of being Jewish."

Hebrew U. Coffee House
to Link Yanks, Israelis

JERUSALEM — American stu-
dents at the Hebrew University
have opened an American-style
coffee house on the Givat Ram
campus.
Located in a converted dormi-
tory game room, the coffee house
is American in mood and style.
But Carl Viniar, a junior-year-
abroad student from Cornell Uni-
versity, who conceived the idea
and turned it into a reality, would
like to see the coffee house become
a place where Americans and Is-
raelis, who seldom meet socially,
can get together.
The place fills up on weekends
when there is entertainment. Dur-
ing the .week, there are discussion
groups, poetry readings, or just
records and conversation.
