-_--Friday, April 2, 1971 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS LETTER BOX Wants Teachers 4o Have a Say in Education Study Editor, The Jewish News: We have noted your March 5 article on the "resolution which declared the need for a study of Jewish education" and the let- ters in your Letter Box of March 19. Who will appoint the study com- mission and who will serve on it? -Who is qualified to interpret class- room interaction of American Jewish youngsters? What type of teacher relates to this youngster and why? What is the relevancy of the Hebrew school classroom to everyday existence? These and other pertinent ques- tions must be soul-searched. There are but a handful of quali- fied people to implement such a monumental task. Unfortunately, they are too humble and reticent to seek the limelight. While a lay- man would not dare guide a physician during an operation, ex- perts in Jewish education are legion. Hebrew teachers for the Am- erican Jew Ish youngsters are doomed to oblivion for we do not __ knew of a single American Jew- ish graduate who specifically chose Hebrew classroom teach- ing as a career. Why? Jews are heavy in - secular education, so- cial work and administrative careers. Could the lack of re- spect,' Ihonor, and earning a de- cent living in this uniquely specialized field be a bottle- 'iieck? Since we have not reached the t where we can honestly ap- h a bright Jewish high school `te and entice him to join anks in the Hebrew school Broom as a life-long career A, our voice is critical in the ,.ouncils of any effective commis- sion. MARVIN LICHTENSTEIN, Hebrew Teachers Association President, Cong. Shaarey Zedek Local 1899, AFT-MFT * * * - Wants Blue, White Colors Worn on Israel's Day Editor, The Jewish News: I had this feeling as I noticed a few customers where I am em- ployed proudly wear the color of the St. Patrick's Day tradition: Let our color of the Mogen David be recognized. Jews years ago in Europe had to walk the streets wearing a yel- low star by demand and had their privileges taken away. Those were the colors then. Now I would like to see a nation- wide recognition of the Inde- pendence of Israel on that day, celebrating with pride by wearing blue and white.
