Israel Prepares for Passover

(Editor's Note: The translation
)f the accompanying Hebrew col-
.umn, prepared by Brit Ivrit Ola-
init of Jerusalem, is by Daniel Kap-
kin, a senior high school student

School. He is the son of Mr. and
Wrs. Percy Kaplan. He has been to

After the holiday of Purim, we
already feel the spirit of Passover.
This is how it is throughout the t.771-1, 1?4
state of Israel, and especially in
Jerusalem. the holy city.
The preparations for the holiday
begin a few weeks prior to Pass-
over. Everybody gives the house a
basic cleaning and starts buying
the necessary items for the holiday

—primarily, of course, Matzot.
Many people in Jerusalem, and
especially those of "Meah Shear-
im'r buy Matzot only at special -
bakeries. When you walk through
certain districts in the city, you
meet up with bearded Jews carry-
ing baskets full of Matzot.
There are many different forms
to the festival of Passover in Israel.
The customs of the holiday vary
among the many tribes and com-
munities who came to Israel—like
he Jews of Yemen and Egypt, the
ews of Babylonia and India, and
e Jews of Poland and Morroco.

for Passover. The entire people in
srael are occupied with prepara-

ions for the holiday. The holiday
f Passover is called the Festival
f Our Freedom; it symbolizes for
s the emergence from slavery into

ell as freedom of the people of

srael in our own day.
And what is the role of the chil-
ren of Israel in the preparations
or the holiday? In all the schools,
nd especially in the lower grades.

office, said.
The Tax Reform Act of 1969 lib-
eralized filing requirements for
many taxpayers so that, for exam-
ple, a single person without self-
employment income is not required
to file a tax return unless he had
income of $1,700 or more in 1970.

However, an individual must file a
return if his self-employment in-
come was $400 or more, even if a
return would not have been re-
quired on his total income.
By filing a return and paying
self-employment tax on part or all
of his income, each self-employed
person helps finance social security
benefits that are payable to self-
employed persons as well as wage
earners.
Besides filing an individual in-
come tax return, a self-employed
individual must complete Schedule
SE (form 1040), computation of
Social Security self-employment
tax. Copies of Schedule SE form
1040) are available from the In-
ternal Revenue, Test said.
For information about social se-
curity and self-employment income,
call the Social Security office,
537-9310.
