Friedlaender Garden on Mount Scopus Recalls Life of Great Jewish Scholar

JERUSALEM—The Israel Fried-
laender Garden on the Mount
Scopus campus of Hebrew Univer-
sity overlooking the Old City, was
rededicated March 19.
Present were members of his
family, headed by the president of
the Israeli Supreme Court, Justice
Shimon Agranat, whose wife is one
of the late Israel Friedlaender's
daughters, and members of the
Rabbinical Assembly of America
and the university.
Chairing the ceremony, Univer-
sity Vice President Bernard Cher-
rick . recalled that his own memo-
ries of the garden dated back to
pre-state Israel when he remem-
bered seeing the late Martin Buber
and the late Eliezer Sukenik stroll
there and relax on the large stone
bench which will soon again be a
feature of the garden.

lems.
Prof. Moshe Davis, head of the
Institute of Contemporary Jewry
at the university and a former
professor and provost of the Jew-
ish Theological Seminary, urged
Friedlaender's followers to devote
even more attention to his work
and pointed out that no collection
of his writings on Zionism had yet
been published nor was there any
biography of his life which could
serve as a guide to helping dis-
affected American Jewish youth
today.

LATE ISRAEL FRIEDLAENDER

The president of the Rabbini-
cal Assembly, Rabbi Gershon
Levi, made reference to Israel
Friedlaender's tragic death in
the Ukraine, to which he had
journeyed from the U.S. on a
rescue mission during the pog-
roms following the First World
War.

Dr. Friedlaender was a professor
at the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary. With the close of World War
I, he applied for permission to im-
migrate to Palestine and made all
arrangements to leave the U.S.
Permission was refused and in-
stead—in great disappointment–.
and against all advice from those
on the scene, he insisted on joining
a mission to the Ukraine, where he
was eventually murdered 50 years
ago. The garden was established
30 years ago by members of the
Israel Friedlaender Study Groups,
on the 20th anniversary of his
death. Largely destroyed between
1948-1967, it has now been restored
and replanted.
Even those who had not known
Dr. Friedlaender personally had
nevertheless been influenced by
the scholarly contribution he made
to Judaeo-Arabic studies and the
equally significant contribution he

MONTREAL (JTA) — Patients
scheduled for release from the
Jewish General Hospital here who
require continued long-term care
now are given expert help in place-
ment in another facility.
The new program of placement
is provided through a joint intake
committee of six medical facility
affiliates of the Allied Jewish Com-
munity Services, the central agen-
cy for Montreal Jewry.
A committee reviews the situa-
tion of each patient scheduled for
discharge from the general hospi-
tal and decides which of the facili-
ties is best suited to his or her
needs. This procedure also pro-
vides for most effective use of beds
in accordance with the patient's
needs, and it is a time saver for
both the applicant and his family
and the medical institutions. One
application and a prompt review
of it has replaced duplicate appli-
cations and much time and effort
in reviewing them.
