Mernoriffl Prayer on the Sabbath

BY BAIMI fitAMVItl , J. FOX
(corY4lalo6 11W1 JTA, Inc.)
It IA t eaditional to offer a
tiitintarial prayer on the Sabbath
Ism, the departed souls.
This is usually done in memory
of those souls who have passed
away within the year and for those
whose 'Irahrzeit (anniversary of
death) occurs on that day or dur-
ing the following week. The rea-
son for doing this on the Sabbath
is because the Sabbath was con-
sidered an appropriate day to pray
for the deceased. The reason for
this is that the Kabalists believe
that the departed souls are releas-
ed from the punishment of Gehena
on the Sabbath and the prayers of
the survivors might prevent them
from being returned there after

the Sabbath. Furthermore, one of
the motives of the Sabbath is to
sample the experience of the World
to come in the Messianic age. At
that time there is to be a general
resurrection of the dead and thus
the living and the dead will be re-
united. Thus on the Sabbath, the
memorial prayer reunites the liv-
ing with the dead as an example
of things to come.
The memorial prayer is re-
cited in the presence of the
Torah Scrolls.

The one who chants the memo-
rial prayer usually holds the Scroll
while he chants the prayer. The
reason for this is the assumption
that it is through the Torah that
the generations of past, present
and future are united. The Torah
is timeless and as such, is both
