Allied Campaign Geared to Open April 1 Moving into the last week before the official opening dinner of the 1971 Allied Jewish Campaign- Israel Emergency Fund, volunteer solicitors redoubled their efforts in seeking as many pledges as possible prior to the first report. The opening dinner is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at Cong. Shaarey Zedek and will mark the greatest fund-raising ef- fort that Detroit Jewry has ever undertaken. Pre-campaign activity thus far has resulted in pledges totalling $8,800,000, Meyer M. Fishman and Max M. Shaye, chairmen,* have announced. This represents an increase of over $2,000,000 more than these same people gave last year. "The response to the crisis which faces us in 1971 has been astound- ing," the chairmen said. "There are many Detroiters who have in- creased their pledges two, three, four and even five times over their 1970 gifts. "That spirit must be continued throughout the entire campaign so that Israel will not fall short through lack of support. What we do now will affect us and our families and all Jews for many years to come." The chairmen pointed out that Israel must keep a constant mili- tary- vigilance and maintain its defense material if it is to survive and this takes 90 per cent of its tax income, leaving little to care for the ill and the children, and to aid the 50,000 immigrants who come from lands of oppression each year to find a new life in Israel. Martin Agronsky, news com- mentator and television journalist, will be guest speaker at the open- ing dinner on April 1. Familiar to TV audiences, A g r on s k y has maintained a vital interest in Mid- dle East affairs ever since he be- gan his career as a cub reporter on the Palestine Post, Israel's English language paper. He went on to become an award-winning TV commentator and international cor- respondent for the networks. At present he is with the Washington Post-Newsweek radio and TV net- work. A professional division fund- raising event will be the podia- trists' section meeting at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Rascal House. Dr. Irvin 0. William Haber, who will person- ally direct the art auction in behalf of the directing firm, has been described as a one-man show. He is noted for his expertise and his knowledge of the art to be made available, as well as the staff assisting him. "My only problem is supply," Haber said. "We sell out at all times. There isn't anything I buy that 10 can't sell. We always at- tract terrific audiences. A good percentage are professionals—law- yers, architects and doctors." Haber's works are sold for $20 to $1,000, but the majority have price tags between $50 and $100. "In addition," he said, "I occa- sionally stop the bidding on a piece if I feel it is beyond die point where the buyer is getting his money's worth. I don't want my customers to be carried away in the bidding. It's bad, from the standpoint of goodwill." Haber was born in New York, attended City College and began selling paintings and antiques in the Bronx 20 years ago.
