CAMPUS CURRENTS: Something very significant is now going on in the American colleges and universities throwing new light on Jewish youth in this country. In one short sentence—the proportion of Jewish students in the American schools of higher learning is declining. The decline has been developing since 1967, but no Jewish organi- zation was seemingly aware of it. Now it became noticeable due to the American Council on Education. The Council carried out a survey of the Jewish freshmen—funded by the American Jewish Committee— to learn how Jewish college freshmen differed from or resembled their Christian peers. Its inquiry revealed quite a lot of interesting facts concerning the JeWish freshmen in 1970. But most revealing to me was the fact that the proportion of Jewish freshmen in colleges, as well as in universities, has been declining each year for the last three years. According to the survey, the percentage of Jewish freshmen who entered universities in 1967 was 9.9 of all the freshmen of that year. In 1968, it dropped to 8.0. In 1969, there was a further drop to '1.8. Similar was the decline in the four-year colleges where Jewish fresh- men constituted 5.3 in 1967, 4.9 in 1968 and 3.9 in the fall term of 1969. Considering also the number of Jewish freshmen in two-yeat colleges the inquiry showed that Jews constituted only 4.2 per cent among all the freshmen who entered all institutions of higher learning in the fall of 1969, compared with the higher proportion of 5.0 they constituted in 1968, and with the even higher percentage of 5.4 in 1967. A continued drop in the number of Jewish freshmen each year naturally means also a consequent drop in the proportion of Jews on the campuses in general. Jews currently constitute about 3 per cent of the general popula- tion in the United States. ',However, because of the stronger emphasis they place on giving their children higher education, the proportion of the Jewish students was always higher. The unexpectedly revealed decline in the proportion of Jewish students—their total has usually been estimated at 350,000—is puzzling the American Jewish Committee leaders. * * THE GENERATION GAP: Despite the accepted opinion that there a wide gap existing between parents and children over certain is values, more than 97 per cent of the Jewish freshmen expressed warm feelings for their parents. They said they realize that their parents are "deeply concerned" about them. About 88 per cent proudly stated their parents are interested in cultural and intellectual pursuits. According to the survey, 87 per cent of the fathers of the freshmen —and more than 92 per cent of the mothers—have received an educa- tion ranking between graduating from _high school to postgraduate college degree. Another interesting fact established by the survey is that more than 98 per cent of Jewish studentg the -universities are American-born. In the colleges, their percentage is Soniwhat - smaller. More than 54 per cent of the parents of the inquired fresiinqn were businessmen, but only 15 per cent of the freshmen indicated. that 'their , major field of study will be business. About 13 per cent chtn as their probable career. Approximately the same' percelitnge--- Was noticed among those who said they intend to become lawyers. Eleven_ 7 , per cent said they prefer history and political science—The percentage was lower (10.5) among those who said they intend to make engineer- ing their occupation. Nine per cent indicated their preference for psychology, sociology and anthropology. The Jewish identity sentiments of the young generation is revealed by the fact that 80 per cent of the freshmen gave the Jewish religion as their preference to other religions. At the same time, 20 per cent of the freshmen reared as Jews said they are no longer identified with the Jewish religion. More than 40 per cent considered their parents as being "deeply religious." - Leavenworth Prison Inmates Plan Passover Services KANSAS CITY (JTA)—Passover services in Leavenworth federal penetentiary will be conducted by Jewish inmates, who also will lead the seder, according to Rabbi Herbert Berger, Jewish chaplain at the prison. Services at the prison are held in its main chapel which has an Ark made by Jewish 60—CARS FOR SALE "68" CAMARO, V-8, vinyl top, power steering, r a d i o. Excellent condition. Reporting that a number of the prisoners speak Hebrew, Rabbi Berger said that he • had asked that a number of honor prisoners be given permission to speak at synagogues and church -es in Kansas City. He sairl the goal was to make the public aware of what must be done to rehabilitate such men and the need to accept them when they complete their terms. 17—HOUSES FOR SALE 17—HOUSES FOR SALE Exclusive inmates, according to Rabbi Berger, who conducts services at 3 Aan kti n _ miliA, FRANKLIN VILLAGE AREA NEW CUSTOM DESIGNED WHITE FRENCH COLONIAL • 4 bedrms, 4 baths • Formal Dining Rm. • Large Family Kitch. w/walk-in pantry. • Marble vanities in luxurious powder rm. and Master bdrm., bath. • Liv, Rm. w/boy window • Pan.
