Delegates have until March 30 to submit additional names by petition, signed by five dele- gates. Election takes place at the ccncluding delegate assembly in May. The program portion of the as- sembly was devoted to a report on the World Conference on Soviet Jewry in Brussels by the five De- troit delegates, Council President Judge Lawrence Gubow and Ex- ecutive Director Walter E. Klein and young adults Helen Opatowski, Judy Grant and Fred Rose. Panel moderator was Evelyn Orbach, Council broadcasting program as- sociate. Rose complained that there was no opportunity for younger dele- gates to take the podium at the Brussels conference, and that speeches were . pre-arranged. He also brought up the Kahane epi- sode and the feud it sparked. The two young women, however, defended the conference leaders and emphasized the importance of unity, which they felt Kahane was trying to disrupt. Judge Gu- bow and Klein agreed, adding that with 750 delegates it was impos- sible to permit all to speak. Gubow praised the three - young people from Detroit who "put our city on the map at the conference. They did a fine job." To those who wish to help So- viet Jewry, he emphasized the importance of continuing to do "the same old things — write letters to Congressmen and So- viet officials, send greetings to Soviet Jews." His view was echoed by Daniel Berk, Detroit attorney who visited the Soviet Union last year and has been actively supporting the efforts of Soviet Jews to win emigration rights. "When we were in Mos- cow," he said, "we met a young computer programer named Leo- nid Rigerman whose mother was born in Brooklyn and who was trying to get to the United States. We wrote letters to the State De- partment, and they later came forth with a statement." Not long ago, Rigerman was per- mitted to leave the Soviet Union. "I don't know how much was due to our letters, but certainly pres- sure helped. Don't minimize the arduous, laborious job of letter writing," Berk said. 152 From State Made Aliya in '70 Midwest's top attraction, "THE DETROIT ANTIQUES SHOW," returns for its 54th presentation at the Masonic Temple April 1-4, 1-10 p.m. daily, closing 6 p.m. Sunday.
