ture in the 12th annual Bargman
Memorial Scholar Series of Tem-

"Judaism 19'84—The Future of the
Synagogue."
Prior to his election to the pres-
ent post in 1967, Rabbi Schindler
was the UAHC's national director
of education, holding responsibility
for the development of Reform
Judaism's program of religious
instruction. He also served as di-
rector of the joint commission on
Jewish education of the UAHC and
the Central Conference of Ameri-
can Rabbis. From 1959 to 1966 he
served as regional director for the
Federation of Reform Temples in
the six-state New England area.
Born in Munich, Rabbi Schindler
is the son of the Yiddish poet,
Eliezer Schindler. After his arrival
in the United States in 1938, he
attended the College of the City
of New York and received a BS
degree with honors in history. In
1953 he was ordained at the He-
brew Union College—Jewish In-
stitute of Religion, Cincinnati.
Rabbi Schindler has been par-
ticularly active in the temple
youth movement for five years
and was dean of the National
Leadership Institute, whose
graduates provide leadership for
almost every congregation.
During World War II he served
in the ski troops of the United
States Army, saw action in three
European campaigns and was
awarded the Bronze Star and the
Purple Heart.
He is the author of "From Dis-
crimination to Extermination," a
study of the German government's
anti-Jewish policies from 1933 to
•1945. He served as literary editor
of the CCAR Journal and was the
founding editor of Dimensions;
Reform Judaism's quarterly of
religious thought.
The lecture is open to the pub-
lic.

its theme "The Synagogue —
Reality or Relic?"
Keynoting, the program will be
an address by Rabbi Balfour
Brickner, director of the commis-
sion on interfaith activities of the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations.
A youth service, prepared by
Merrill Marks, a student at Oak-
land University and chairman of
the College Jewish Youth Corps,
will open the progam.
In attendance will be the offi-
cers and board members of the
nine Reform congregations affi-
liated with the local federation.
A series of workshops are plan-
ned on the following topics:
