Prayer for New Art Show Sunday Series to Close With Dr. Gitelman Month on Sabbath to Aid Synagogue at Young Israel; Scholars Cited By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX Dr. Zvi Gitelman, associate pro- fessor of political science at the University of Michigan, will de- liver at 8:45 p.m. Thursday the final lecture in the annual series sponsored by the Young Israels of Oak-Woods and Greenfield at the Oak-Woods Center. Dr. Gitelman will speak on "Jewish Religion in the USSR and Eastern Europe: The End of the Road?" Dr. Gitelman is author of (Copyright 1971, JTA, Inc.) It is customary to offer a prayer for the new month on the Sabbath before the month starts. This emulates the age old tradi- tion whereby the Rabbinical Court in Jerusalem, after receiving the testimony of witnesses announced the arrival of the new moon. The general purpose behind the tradi- tion was to make man aware of the fact that the use of time is up to his discretion, i.e., man is the mas- ter of his destiny. Since we do not now have a Rabbinical Court in Jerusalem of the character of the Sanhedrin and, since the practice of having the court announce the arrival of the moon is not used, we announce the coming arrival of a new moon by having the exact hour and minute announced in the synagogue on the Sabbath before the new moon arrives. This an- nouncement is couched in prayers. A prayer precedes the announce- ment. Another one follows it. Both appeal to the Almighty for His blessing to make the coming month a healthy, satisfying, and reward- ing one. The prayer for the new moon is recited while someone holds the Torah in the congregation. In the absence of the official Rabbinical Court of Jerusalem, all official acts done by the commu- nity, which would normally be done by the court and are applicable in the synagogue, are done in the presence of the Torah Scroll. It is the Torah Scroll which serves as the basis of the authority for the community to acL This also is the reason why the Torah is held dur- ing the recitation of Kol Nidre. The annulment of vows for a commu- nity, was something that belonged to the Rabbinical Court on certain occasions. Therefore, in the ab- sence of the court, the Torah is held as a symbol of the authority of the community which is acting in accordance with the laws of the Torah. We're Where You Want Us Now what excuse- do ou have for not buying White House Sermon Draws Mixed Reviews; Rabbi Praised by Nixon WASHINGTON — Rabbi Joshua 0. Haberman of the Washington Hebrew Congregation delivered a sermon Sunday morning at a White House religious service which also included the Christian doxology. In response to criticism from some Jewish quarters that the doxology ("Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost") should not have been part of a service with a Jewish religious leader, the Presi- dent responded that the service was "ecumenical" and "interna- tional." Rabbi Louis Finkelstein of the Jewish Theological Seminary offi- ciated at a similar service in June 1969, for which there was criticism from Jewish groups, but no official complaint. The President described Dr. Haberman's sermon, on personal responsibility as "brilliant." In-it, the rabbi said "no act- of na- tic-tal atonement (after the My Lai massacre) at this time would have greater compensatory, moral value than quick ratification by the U.S. Senate of the genocide convention which the President has already endorsed and recom- mended." from Sales G Service on all makes 28000 TELEGRAPH AT TEL-TWELVE MALL SOUTHFIELD.
