Poll in Newsweek Shows Jews Apparatus Can Reach Closest to Absolute Zero

Unanimous on U.S. Aid to Israel
NEW YORK (JTA)—The Gallup
Poll, on commission from News-
week magazine, finds an American
Jewish community in which—less
than 50 years ago—many regarded
Zionism as a divisive concept, dan-
gerous to the security of that com-
munity as a minority, yet now has
a substantial number of members
favoring U.S. aid to Israel, even
at the risk of war.
The poll found virtual unanimity
among American Jews for contin-
ued United States economic and
military aid to Israel. More than
four of every 10 American Jews
were recorded as supporting that
position even at the risk of involv-
ing the U.S. in a major conflict.
The findings of the poll were
published in the March 1 edition
of Newsweek in its cover story,
"The American Jew Today."
The article also reported an in-
teresting footnote to the widely
reported generation gap in Amer-
ican Jewish life: For a growing
number of American Jews of all
ages, Israel "is the one place
where a Jew can live a fully Jew-
ish life." But most of the younger
American Jews who feel "commit.
ted to developing their Jewish con-
sciousness" want to do it here in
the United States.
The conclusion was that Amer-
ican Jewry, in a growing search
for a Jewish identity, was dis-
playing "a new dynamic" which
could lead to "significant
changes" In relations with the
rest of American society and
with Jews abroad.
The poll said that U.S. Jews are
better educated, are attending col-
lege in greater numbers and enjoy
a higher median income than the
U.S. average. It also said that
American Jews are overwhelming-
ly middle class and consistently
vote liberal.
But Newsweek reporters , who in-
terviewed representative , Jews,
among them leading intellectuals,
student radicals, members of the
Jewish establishment and the man-
in-the-street, also found that Jews
considered themselves faced with
a painful choice between their lib-
eral leanings and their interests as
Jews.
This was linked to the "discov-
ery" that many American Jews do
not share the affluence of the ma-

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Two Am-
erican scientists who settled in Is-
rael recently have constructed a
refrigeration apparatus at the
Technion that has come closer than
any other to reaching absolute
zero.
The apparatus was designed by
Dr. Judah Landau, a 28-year-old
former resident of Albuquerque,
N.M., and Dr. Ralph Rosenbaum,
31, formerly of New York City.
Both joined the staff of the Tech-
nion physics department in 1969.
The temperature reportedly
achieved by the device is minus
532.67 degrees on the Fahrenheit
scale, which is 55 thousands of a
degree, F. above absolute zero.
Landau and Rosenbaum say
their machine may reach 1,000th
of a degree above absolute zero on
the Centigrade scale, which is used
in Israel and throughout most of
Europe.
According to the Technion,
the laws of physics make it im-
possible to reach absolute zero,
the coldest possible temperature
in the universe at which all mat-
ter is at rest.
The refrigerating apparatus is
used to study the fundamental
physical properties of solids and
liquids at extreme cold., It employs
isotopes of helium, some of which
are rare and have become avail-
able only recently.
Prof. Charles Kuper of the Tech-
nion explained to the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency that "at the pres-
ent time, the frontiers of know-
ledge in physics are high-energy

Israel Bar Mitzva
Program Expanded
A new program greatly simplify-
ing the arrangements for Bar
Mitzva in Israel, a tradition that
has been growing in recent years,
has been announced by the Israel
Ministry of Tourism and El Al
Israel Airlines.
Included in the Bar Mitzva pro-
gram are a reception, "Aliya
l'Tora," at a Tel Aviv or Jeru-
salem synagogue or at the Wes-
tern Wall, a kidush, a ceremony
on Mount Zion including the pre-
sentation of a silk Talit and a
special certificate from the presi-
dent of the state of Israel, and a.
visit to the home of an Israeli
family with a son of Bar Mitzva
age.

in a brochure that has been special-
ly produced and which is available
from offices of El Al Israel Air-
lines and the Israel Government

me, have some resemblances to
the Jews. They don't celebrate
Christmas and it's much easier
for them to have a minyan. If
Jews had 500,000,000 population,
imagine how many minyans Jews
would enjoy.
While there are apparently no
Jews in the Manhattan phone book
whose last name is Jew, there are
some 150 persons in the Manhattan
book named Israel. There are also
a half dozen named Judah, which
is the term from which Jew is
derived, but the Judahs in the
phone book do not seem to be
Jews. The first names given, Car-
ter and Douglas, etc., are not of
the Jewish type.
KISSING IN KUWAIT
The N. Y. Times recently had a
story about the rich Arab land of
Kuwait, where there are only 200,-
000 people but the oil flows like
water. One wonders why more
of the Arab refugees we hear so
much about don't immigrate there
Is it possible they won't let other
Arabs in?
But the part of the -Story which
interested us was about a quaint
custom of kissing there. In greet-
ing a person, you kiss him on the
nose, not on the cheek. If he is an
upper class, You kiss the upper
part of his nose but if you are be-
neath him in status, you must not
kiss the upper part but the lower
part of the nose.
What happens, we wondered, if
you kiss and miss. You try for the
upper part but hit the lower.
The custom would not do for Is-
rael. Many Jews would say, "Well

Planting Tree for Every Baby

Religious Jews during the past
month have been thinking about
trees. A good many American
Jews probably know nothing about
the New Year for trees, but reli-
gious Jews observe it. In Israel,
it's a major holiday. Children go
out to plant trees.
There was a little different twist
given the holiday this year in
Eilat. There, on the holiday, a
tree was planted for every child
born during the year. There were
450 births, so 450 trees were plant-
ed.
The trees probably liked it and
the babies, when they grow up,
will like it, too.
Eilat is the town where King
Solomon received the Queen of
Sheba. According to the Midrash,
Solomon could speak the language
of the trees. They are wonderful
things—trees. They give fruit,
shelter, wood for houses and out
of them comes the paper for books
and newspapers.
The Quakers seemed to like
trees, like the Jews. n early
Philadelphia, the streets were
named after trees, Chestnut, Wal-
nut, Spruce, Mulberry. But it's
better to plant trees than name
streets after them. -
We wish we could speak the
language of trees like Solomon.
Then we would - say, "Thank you,
Mr. and Mrs. Tree, as the case
may be, for all of your contribu-
tions to men." No doubt the trees
would say, "That's all right, don't
mention it." They are not very
talkative except to those who un-
derstand poetry.
CHINESE "JEWS"
If you don't know it. all the
"Jews" in the Manhattan phone
book are Chinese.
Among those whose names are
given as "Jew" are Doo Leung
Jew, Kock Keon Jew and Shew
Jeung Jew. A fourth one Is listed

the Technical University of Hel-
