to Synagogue Establishment by Youth
Rabbi Arthur Green, activist
rabbi and founder of the Havura
movement, will speak at the adult
study institute of Adas Shalom
synagogue, 8:45 p.m. Tuesday at
Hillel Day School.
His topic will be, "Concerned
Young Jews Challenge the Syna-
gogue Establishment."
Rabbi Green helped to found, in
1968, the Havurat Shalom commu-
nity in Boston, which he describes
as an experiment in Jewish re•
ligious and communal renewal.
Enrolling young people from most
of the colleges in the area, it sought
to combine traditional Jewish re-
ligious values with social activism
and other values of the youth
culture.
It has had growing influence in
other college communities, parti-
cularly in the East.
Coffee and cake will follow the
lecture. Rabbi Jacob E. Segal will
be discussion moderator.
Rabbi Green's lecture will be the
sixth in a 10-week series of the
adult study institute. The series is
open to all.
The March 16 speaker will be
Batya Abbady, Israeli humanist.
An hour study session, beginning
at 7:45, precedes the lectures.
Rabbi Green was ordained in
1967, after studying Judaism at
Brandeis College and Jewish
Theological Seminary. His parti-
cular field of study is the Jew-
ish mystical tradition, in which
he seeks the groundwork for a
contemporary mystical theology
of Judaism.
