War- burg, prominent cellist and patron of music who died Feb. 14 at age 69, was a son of the late financier and art patron Felix M. Warburg and the former Frieda Schiff. Educated at the Middlesex School and Harvard College, Mr. Warburg studied music in Vienna and Paris as a cellist and con- ductor. He debuted in Vienna as a cello soloist, in 1927, later that year appearing in New York with the Philharmonic-Symphony Or- chestra under Dr. Walter Dam- rosch. With his father, Mr. Warburg founded the Stradivarius Quartet, and the group toured. Europe for about six years, playing 95 en- gagements in one season. Mr.' Warburg was a friend of music and musicians. As vice president of the City Center, he was a member of the group that prevented the destruction of Car- negie Hall. In 1930, he commis- sioned Ernest Bloch's "Sacred Service," which the composer ded- icated to him. Known for his musical Imosv- ledge, Mr. Warburg inaugur- ated a series of. programs for New .York's educational televi- sion station on the life and works of Beethoven. He gave "lecture demonstrations" in concert and lecture halls and on radio and television. At the . time of his death, he was completing a paper on "The Extended Diatonic Sys- tem," with his interest in har- monic theory. Among his cultural activities, Mr. Warburg served as adviser to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Mannes College of Music.
