ONE SUMMER, at Fresh Air Camp in Brighton, Leonard Schwartz, 16, took a piece of clay and shaped the figure of Lincoln ... Today, an internationally known sculptor whose works have ap- peared all over the world in one- man shows, he is at the Arwin Galleries on Grand River today and tomorrow ... Professionally known - as "Leonard," he was an orphan and never knew his real name un- til he was nine years old . . . By age 16, the Jewish Child Placement Bureau had referred him to over 21 foster homes to no avail . . . Uuti- mately, the Jewish Community Cen- ter became his only home . . . When they discovered his artistic talent, they found a room for him to work in, where be was discov- ered by "Kashloon" and became his protege . . . Leonard was only 25 when he was awarded a Guggenheini Fellowship, the youngest ever to win such en honor, and is now head of the Faculty of Sculpture at Maidstone College of Art in England . . . In 1960, he was commissioned to de- sign the figure in front of the Jewish Center . . a 12-ton block of Indiana limestone carved to represent his concept of the indi- vidual and the community and their interrelationship. SYLVA LIPSON, a teacher at Hampton Elementary in Detroit, and remembered well by so many community-Hes, has retired . . .
