USSR Authority Detroit Socirdites
to Donate Auction
Reviews Status Proceeds to Israel
Detroit Socialites will hold its
of Soviet Jewry annual
Israel Auction 8:30 p.m.

Hundreds of Hadassah members
and friends heard Dr. Zvi Gitelman
speak on ."Soviet Politics Vis-a-Vis
Determinants of Jewish Immigra-
tion" at Hadassah's annual Edu-
cation Night at Cong. Bnai Moshe.
Due to an emergency briefing
meeting on Soviet Jewry in Israel
in preparation for the worldwide
conference of Jewish leaders in
Brussels, Dr. Abraham Kaplan
was unable to speak as earlier
announced. Dr. Gitelman, associate
professor of political.science at the
University of Michigan, reviewed
the history of the Soviet Jews and
spoke of the problems of their
immigration to Israel.
Dr. Gitelman, who came to the
University of
Michigan in 1968
after completing
his education at
Columbia Univer-
sity, is an autho-
rity on Soviet
Jewry and has
visited the USSR
twice. His book
"Jewish Sections
of the Communist
Party in the Dr. Gitelman
1920s" is to be published next year.

He stated that in 1970 about
1,000 Jews emigrated to Israel,
an dadded that 8,000 Jewish fam-
ilies, or 35,000 people, have reg-
istered to leave for Israel. At the
rate of only 1,000 a year, it will
take 35 years to accomplish this
emigration.
The cost of registration for Soviet
Jews is very high, he said. When
Jews declare that they are not
citizens of Russia, but of Israel by
registering to leave, they ,can lose
their jobs and their homes, and
they face social and political ostra-
cism. They are forced to live—in
limbo—in cellars with other politi-
cal outcasts doing menial work
like street cleaning, Dr. Gitelman

Saturday at Berkley Masonic
Temple.
Meyer Green, program chairman,
said all proceeds will be turned
over to the Israel Emergency
Fund, and the entire Jewish com-
munity is invited.
Articles to be auctioned are
being donated by members and
friends of this organization, and
Bill Sorokin will be the auctioneer.
Dancing to recorded music and
refreshments will be on the agenda.
The organization will celebrate
its 14th year at an anniversary
dance March 27, to which the
public will be invited.

And if the Soviet Jews are al-
