they were sent to the infamous

During a question-answer period,
Mrs. Ciesielska, with Dr. Mames

lated to us the inhuman conditions
under which inmates, especially
Jews, survived in the concentra-

the apparent hopelessness of their

Among his Interests are coin collecting
and sports.)

Last Sunday the Akiva HebMw
Day-. School held its-third annual
concert, "The Israeli Night of
Stars," in honor of David I. Berris.
Cantor Hyman. Adler of Bnai
David first led the audience in the
singing of the national anthem and
Hatikva. Afterwards, Hal Gordon
and his orchestra played a few
Hebrew melodies, leading up to
Haim Shelaff and his Tel Aviv
Revue, an Israeli group that sang
and danced. We were then enter-
tained - by Sara Aviani and -her
Yemenite Trio. They sang He-
brew, English„Spanish and Russian
songs.
After the intermission, we lis-
tened to Sheldon -Klein, president
of our student council, speak to us
in Hebrew and English about the
merits of the school and the need
for community support. Rabbi
Donis afterwards presented Mr.
Berris with a testimonial - plaque
and beautiful kidush cup in honor
of his years of devotion and dedi-
cated services to help better our
Jewish community. -
After the presentation we watched

,

the brilliant pantomimists, the
Yakims. They put on a number of
sketches to our delight. Finally
came the star of our show, the
famed Jo Amar, who sang many
Hebrew, Arabic and Spanish songs.
I'd like to personally -thank Mr.
Berris, and those like him, for
making-it possible for us to attend
a yeshiva such as Akiva Hebrew
Day School Even if he wasn't my
grandfather, I'd still be thankful.
