THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Of Jewish Cowbo ys Named Bronco

By DAVID SCHWARTZ
(Copyright arm JTA. Inc.)
The papers recently reported
the passing of Bronco Billy An-
derson, who made his debut in
the first Western film, "The Great
Train Robbery." He played the role
of the man who robbed a bank,
then gave the money to the sheriff,
who gambled it away, but Bronco
Billy then held up the gamblers
and got the money back and gave
it back to the sheriff, who re-
warded Billy by appointing him
deputy.

In those days, robbers were
often nohle-hearted. Jesse James
gave a poor widow the money to
pay the mortgage, then held up
the man who got the money.
But Broncho Billy Anderson
was not only a film robber. He

was the first to play cowboy
roles, The funny thing about
Bronco Billy Anderson is that
his real name was Max Aronson.
He was a Jewish boy from New
York's east side.

Days Assigned to Read Torah

It is related that Rabbi Mayer
of Rothenberg would do so. Some
explain the reason for this to be
because the reading of the Torah is
a simulation of the revelation at
Sinai where the Torah was origin-
ally given. At that occasion the
people of Israel stood up in awe
and reverence. The revelation at
Sinai is thus considered to be an
on-going experience which the Jew
senses every time he hears the
reading of the Torah. Thus people
stand during the Torah reading.
