Jewish Draftees Reportedly'Unaware of Conscientious Objection, Meaning
By BEN GALLOB

(Copyright 1971, JTA, Inc.)
Most of the Jewish draftees com-
ing to the Jewish Family and Chil-
dren's Service in Paterson, N.J.,
which offers a draft counseling
program, do not know what a con-
scientious objector is or how they
personally feel about such a status,
according to a JFCS staff member
in charge of the program.
According to Mrs. Rhoda Fish-
leder, the only JFCS staff mem-
ber trained to provide such coun-
seling, the issue of CO status is
the most complicated aspect of
her work. For such situations, she
said, her contribution is only pre-

ity of the question and she refers
possible COs to resource agencies.
She reported on this phase- of the
work of the agency in the current
issue of the newsletter of the Jew-

Only full-time counselors are
able to keep themselves informed
of the various rulings on Selec-
tive Service and "these are re-
source peeople" for counselors
like her, she said. She turns to
the Jewish Peace Fellowship or
the American Friends Service
Committee in New York, or to
the Draft Information Center in
Teaneck for such information,
she reported.
Mrs. Fishleder cited a number
of reasons as justification for draft
counseling by a family agency.
She explained that "for many mid-
dle class boys who have been quite
sheltered, the process of making
proper decisions for themselves at
the age of 18 is very difficult. Of-
ten these boys have parents who
want to take over the process."
She listed as a second reason
the utilization of casework skills
to detect problems which might
affect the situation, declaring that
"the army does not want young
men who will create problems for
them because of their inability to
fit into army life." She added that
young men "should be weeded out
