This Week in Jewish History — Youth 'Revolt' Reported at RZA Convention (From the files of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency) • 40 Years Ago This Week: 1931 Only days after welcoming Britain's clarification of its 1930 White Paper as "a basis for cooperation," Dr. Chaim Weizmann insisted he would not resume the presidencies of the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency. Anti-Semitic disturbances in Hamburg marred the 75th anniversary of the death of Heinrich Heine. Joseph Rosenstein, 19-year-old messenger boy and violinist, won a contest for a solo appearance with the Chicago Symphony. Dr. Karl Vornberg, writer and educator, disclosed that in 1891 a group of Chicago Jews and a Christian cleric petitioned President Har- rison to support "Palestine for the Jews"--five years before Theodor Herd published "The Jewish State." An anonymous Frenchman donated 325,000 francs for the "diffusion Ai Jewish truths through the publication of works on the Jewish reli- gion." 10 Years Ago This Week: 1961 NEW YORK (JTA)—A "revolt of youth" occurred at the conven- tion of the Religious Zionist Organ- ization of America at Long Beach, N.Y., the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned. About 60 youth delegates par- ticipated in what was essentially a conflict between the established leadership of the Mizrachillapoel Ha mizrachi movement and its younger elements over-basic re- forms. Benny Ben-David, a spokesman for Noar Mizrachi, the RZA youth organization, told JTA that the main issue was democratization of election procedures and the way the convention was run.. A flyer issued by the youth fac- tion said it had "threatened to break up the convention because very few of the delegates had been duly elected according to their ca. stitution." But the youngsters ex- pressed satisfaction that they re- ceived 25 per cent of the member- ship on convention committees. Ben-David told the JTA that at last year's convention, youth mem- bership on committees was "negli- gible." In addition, two represent- atives of the youth element were elected national vice presidents. Ben-David said another point at issue between -the youth and the established leadership was the mat- ter of priorities. The young .people want more money for youth activities and Jewish education, while the eld- Following demonstrations by and arrests of Jews protesting Mor- occan repression, King Mohammed V voiced "solicitude" for them, suspended the anti-Jewish government newspaper, and lifted the ban on Jewish emigration. Dr. Robert Servatius said his client Adolf Eichmann had told him: "I neither know nor care what they will do to me. I followed the orders of my superiors just like a soldier. I took the oath of an SS officer and then another oath and I had to take orders." Widows and orphans of Polish victims of the Nazis filed a $1,000,000,000 suit against Eichmann. Dr. Ham Globke, state secretary to West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, said that "If I bad foreseen the later development of the Jewish question I would not have written the commentary" to the Nazis' Nuremberg race laws. West Germany's Finance Ministry decided to raise indemnification payments to Nazi victims by 15 per cent. The attorney general of Hesse, Germany, offered a $4,760 reward for information leading to the capture of Dr. Josef Mengele, Nazi doctor reportedly in Argentina. A "liberal" faction within Histadrut was formed by a merger of the General Zionist and Progressive factions. Manya Schochat, a foun- der of Histadrut, and of Kfar Giladi, died at 81. Egyptian President Nasser declared in Damascus: "The day of reckoning is drawing near, and the United Arab Republic will drive the first nail into Israel's coffin and destroy the Zionists before they succeed in conquering the Arabs." German Right Wingers Nabbed With Arms Cache NY Communist Front Group Trying to Raise Funds for Anti-Israel Ads NEW YORK — The Anti-Defa- mation League warned that a New York-based Communist front group is trying to raise funds from un- suspecting Americans for an anti- Israel advertising campaign uti- lizing Arab and Soviet propaganda. According to Arnold Forster, general counsel of the ADL, the group calls itself the "Committee for a Just Peace in the Middle East" and lists its headquarters as 100 E. 16 St. The address, Forster said, is that of the Jeffer- son Book Store, described by the FBI as one of a number of "Com- munist bookstores which functions throughout the United States under the management of loyal, long- time party members." The Committee, Forster de- clared, is planning to kick off its campaign with an ad in the New York Times. The text for the ad, he went on to say, has already appeared in the Daily World, offi- cial organ of the Communist Party in the U.S., and the Guardian, a self-proclaimed independent radical newspaper. Accompanying the ad in the two publications was a plea for sponsors and financial contrib' utors in order "to place the text as an advertisement in the N.Y. Times." The proposed N.Y. Times ad calls for "a peaceful political settlement" in the Middle East. Among other things it quotes from a memorandum presented by the Egyptian government to Gunnar Jarring on Jan. 15 which basically calls for Israeli with- drawal from occupied territories. Prospective sponsors are asked to make checks payable to the committee or to "D. Rubel, treasurer." "D. Rubel," Forster declared, "is Dan Rubel, owner of the Jef- ferson Book Store." Forster also pointed out that Alex Kolkin, chairman of the Com- mittee for a Just Peace in the Middle East and described by the Daily World as "a rank and file leader of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union," is a member of the national committee of the Communist Party U.S.A. The formation and first meeting of the committee took place last October, when the group passed "a pro-Arab resolution which sounded like the partisan propa- ganda which is routine from Cairo," Forster said. Safed University Planned SAFED (ZINS) — Plans have been completed by the education ministry for establishment of a university in Safed which will com- mence in 197e. The new school will be founded by the state, in cooperation with Bar-Ilan University at Ramat Gan. BONN (JTA)—Nazi literature, swastikas, submachine guns, pistols and ammunition were 'uncovered by police this week after raiding homes in Bonn, Cologne and Dus- seldorf. Twelve persons—most of them members of the neo-Nazi Democratic "Party—were arrested. Police said that right-wing groups were planning terrorist acts in Germany.
