Flint Group Reports on UJA `Operation.braa Sevin Flint' residents have re- turned from the United Jewish Appeal's one-week fact-finding trip to Israel. Dr. Ira Marder, Murray Moss. Dr. Leon Rosky, Rabbi Gerald Schuster, Dr. Allan Silverton, Dr. Jack Stanzler and Hy Bergman, joined by H. B. Shaine of Grand Rapids, were briefed by Israeli leaders, visited areas and installa- tions"not normally open to tourists and surveyed social and welfare installations. In six days, they covered the country from the Galilee and the Golan Heights to the Sinai Penin- sula. They visited troops in the field, greeted immigrants on arri- val and saw how they are absorbed into the fabric of Israeli life; they observed educational facilities and the aged in JDC-Malben homes; and met young people who have spent every night for more than three years in border Kibutz shelters. Meeting with Mayor Asher Nizri of Kiryat Shmoneh, a settlement town for new immigrants, the mis- sion members learned of the town's depressed economic status and the high population turnover. Mayor Nizri stated that more immigrants are needed to settle the town, and once there is an increase in popu- lation, industry would be devel- oped. The people of Kiryat Shmoneh come from 40 different countries, but are united in the Hebrew language. as Jews and as Israelis. Two students from the town's comprehensive high school told the group about the financial limitation on higher education there. After 10th grade, most teen-agers must drop out and find Jobs. Few reach university level, they said, adding that the town urgently needs more schol- krddps. The Flint leaders also visited Beit She'an Valley settlements along the Jordanian front, and the kibutzim of Kier Ruppin, Tirat Zvi and Gelber, also on Israel's border. There, they were shown the shelters where youngsters have been sleeping for the last three years. They learned that even dur- ing this cease fire period, more Roberta Smith Engaged to Richard Friedman Flint '.News 1 Community Calendar Members of Flint's Operatics Israel Mission kibitz at "Outs Shar Hagolan.
