Earlier prominent members of
the New York Board of Rabbis—
Including two past presidents—
published a letter in the New York
Times demanding the "correction
of a misleading report" that the
board had reversed its long-stand-
ing opposition to public funds for
parochial schools.
"We were astonished to read
the prominently displayed report
on the front page of the New York
Times of Thursday, January 28,
that the New York Board of Rabbis
has gone on record in support of
government aid to parochial
schools," their letter declared,
adding:
"The only action taken, on which
the report was apparently based,
was an address by the president.
"There are undoubtedly some
members of the Board of Rabbis
who would favor government aid
to parochial schools, while
Many other would surely oppose
it. Only after formal considera-
tion of the question and a vote
Will It be possible to ascertain
the official view of the board."
Leo Pfeffer, special counsel of
the American Jewish Congress,
said he was "deeply gratified" • by
a Federal Court decision uphold-
ing the right of a civic organize
tion to sue in its own name against
the granting of public funds to pri-
vate schools. In the decision, Judge
Morris E. Lasker approved the mo-
tion of the Committee for Public
Education and Religious Liberty
(PEARL) for a three-judge fed-
eral court to hear PEARL's suit
against the 1970 state law permit-
ting $28,000,000 in such aid.
