NEW YORK (ZINS)—Inter-
viewed on the New York news
radio station WINS, Nikolai Log-
inov, first secretary of the Russian
delegation to the UN, registered a
vigorous defense of his country's
Soviet Jewry policies. Loginov
contended that it is nonsense to
charge the USSR with anti-Semi-
tism, and in support of this, he
said that none of the applicants
by Jews to leave the country are
predicated on reasons of anti-
Semitism.
The reasons, he said, have to
do with a desire to be reunited
with next of kin.
Loginox dwelt on the provisions
of the USSR constitution which
guarantee equality to ad citizens,
and where the legal code provides
that anti-Semitism is a criminal
offense.
Commenting on the Leningrad
trial, he defended the severe
penalties as being in accord
with those resolutions, adopted
by the United Nations and by the
international air community, as
a way of stopping the epidemic
of plane hijackings. His closing
remarks were devoted to an ac-
cusation that anti-Soviet propag-
anda is organized and instigated
by the state of Israel.
He cited the contents of an
anonymous letter that flatly as-
serted all anti-Russian activity
would cease the moment the
Soviet Union altered its Middle
Easetrn policies.
He also remarked that Russian
mothers opposed the emigration
of young Soviet Jews to Israel
because they knew that these
young people would quickly be
mobilized into Israels army. -
New Play to Show
Human Side of Herzl
NEW YORK—A play acclaimed
in Israel, "The Man Behind the
Legend," is scheduled by the Na-
tional Jewish Welfare Board to tour
the U.S. and will premiere at the
Baltimore ,Jewish Center.
Based on the life of Theodor
Herzl, the opening was arranged
to coincide with its celebration of
Israel Independence Day.
It was written by Israeli play-
wright Yaacov Orland, who also
will direct it.
Dr. Samuel D. Freeman, director
of the JWB lecture bureau, said,
"The play unfolds the human side
of this almost legendary figure."
Booking information can be ob-
tained from the JWB Lecture Bu-
reau, 15 East 26th St., New York
